Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

OSPREY MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

HOW TO MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW TO MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've had numerous but this is the best Have traveled with backpacks for 40+ years but this is the best pack I've ever had. I did a lot of research before buying this, and it turned out to be perfect for the type of travel I do....international, fairly lengthy, and pretty active. I can only assume that whoever designed it has traveled extensively like I have. I object to a whole bunch on unnecessary straps, zippers, or little pockets....I've even been known to cut showy, weighty things off brand new packs...but this pack hits just the right balance of features, security, and size/weight. The fact that it's carry-on compatible on most scheduled air carriers is just a bonus. A wonderful backpack.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great bag with one major flaw.. I used this pack for the 6 month trip through central and south america, plus a bit of europe. I absolutely loved the pack in all ways except for the laptop/tablet pocket. While its great that it's padded, having it on the front is completely the wrong spot. When you fill your pack the front of the pack is curved, which puts pressure on the tablet. This mean i had a cracked screen as it bent slightly in the bag, making it unusable just 1 month into my trip, and 400 bucks down the drain :( Apart from this, it's still a great pack, and if they fix this flaw I would definitely buy the next version. Until i'll use a different option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great carry-on travel bag Went to Vietnam for 2 weeks with this bag and looked for something that could go anywhere and travel fast, as well as meet carryon requirements. Having gone 25k+ miles over 7 planes, 5 cars and 2 scooters, I can safely say this is the best carryon bag i've owned and helped me focus on a minimalist approach to travel. Never been excited for a pack as much as this one. Got a simple combo lock that happened to fit through BOTH lockable zippers at once, so double win. I also own an Aether 70 for backpacking, so I understand utility vs comfort, heavy vs light load, etc etc. Don't normally write reviews online, but i felt this was warranted. Great pack!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best carry-on travelpack I have ever used. This bag is an all-round solid bag for folks who like to travel light. It is highly adjustable with an excellent hip belt for carrying all day long. It is lightweight, attractive, and flies under the radar as it is carry-on compatible. I use one large and two medium packing cubes to keep my clothes organized inside, but am blown away by how much this bag fits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great carry on pack! This is a rad bag! I recently used this on a short trip as my only bag. Was able to fit all my clothes, a jacket, shoes and climbing gear with room to spare. Definitely carry on compliant , no issues with the size even when fully loaded to the max. Got to walk right past all those people with the dorky rolling bags getting asked to check their bags at the gate. When not fully loaded, will fit under the seat. Backpack straps are super comfy and used the bag as a day pack on short hikes. Overall great carry on pack. Only issue is the two slots for water bottles can't be used when the pack is more than half full. Also, if you have a laptop it sits toward the outside of the pack instead of against the back. Not as protected. Well built and another great Osprey pack!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I was looking for a backpack style carry on and this was the best one I found. I use it all of the time for business and personal travel. Love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a great purchase! In my opinion, this bag is perfect for travel, whether it be for weekend trips or for a couple weeks (as long as you pack lightly). Its main compartment has ample space, and its laptop/tablet pocket is definitely useful. (I personally don't mind the laptop pocket being toward the front of the bag.) The straps can be tucked into the back of the bad, which is also a great feature; it serves as either a backpack or a duffle bag, so you can easily use it as a carry-on piece of luggage if you are bringing another small backpack on your trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellence I bought two Opsrey backpacks--the Farpoint 40 and the Ozone 46. My 13 year old son carried the Farpoint and I carried the Ozone for a three week trip through Italy. Both packs worked great for us, but we both preferred the Farpoint. It turns out we didn't need all the pockets on the Ozone. The Farpoint you can open like a suitcase and that is really helpful for packing. It seemed more compact for traveling but also seemed to hold as much stuff. The one think I liked better on the Ozone was the easy access iPad pocket.

what size in the osprey Fairpoint 40 should I get for someone 5'3", 114 lbs, but with a long torso? This is for a student traveling abroad for the semester who will likely make long weekend and week trips throughout Europe. Thanks!

Asked by: sheryl
Hey there, Thanks for reaching out to us. Even with the long torso, for that height, I would say go with the small/medium. That should be a perfect fit! Hope this helped you out.
