Carry all of your gear in comfort with the Osprey Aether 85 Pack, a backpack that can withstand heavy loads and long excursions. Custom molded and sized hipbelt and shoulder straps ensure comfort, and Straight Jacket compression straps keep the weight balanced. There's a reason these packs have been around for over eight years, and it probably has something to do with their durability, their versatility, and the confidence the users have in their Aether pack. Do your back a favor with this pack. Your back would give you a great big hug to thank you, but that is sort of impossible and could get complicated.

Osprey Airscape

Osprey Airscape
Osprey's AirScape™ mesh covered ridge foam backpanels set a new standard in the industry. With its ability to keep the weight close, provide cushion, allow ventilation and add load carry is quite a list of needs from this unassuming backpanel. It successfully accomplished all of that in a way that allows it to be used in the large gear hauling packs and lightweight day hiking packs.

Osprey Custom Molding

Osprey Custom Molding
When the loads get heavy, a supportive and effective hipbelt can support that weight. Osprey custom heat molds their hipbelt to you, eliminating hotspots, chaffing and bruising. This combines the best of a stiff, load bearing hipbelt with the cushioned comfort you need most when trekking with all your gear.

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish I would have purchased long ago This has quickly become my favorite possession. Everything about it is great. The fit, the padding, the suspension, the ability to hold all my other junk, the look, the front loading zipper, and the way it makes my pack feel 20 pounds lighter. I used to be a fan of TNF. I really liked their older packs until I bought one last year. No idea what happened over there, but it caused me to buy this. Money well spent. ,, If I were to find a "flaw", it would be the lack of a clip for the bottom z compression straps. Also could use another pocket or two, but...... whatever. This is high quality, and if you are looking to upgrade, this is money well spent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best pack I've ever owned!!! Can't say enough positive things about this pack. I've owned many packs...NorthFace, Gregory, etc...but none have compared to this one! Plenty of room, plenty of bells & whistles. The comfort of this pack is what is amazing. I took my sons on a week long trip to Isle Royale last month and I had this thing packed, weighing in at just under 50 lbs and felt as though I was cheating...seriously...absolutely incredible pack. The harness/belt/straps make the feel of this pack seem next to nothing. I'll be buying another as a Christmas present for my son. Osprey nailed it and so did the Partridge Creek Moosejaw staff....THANK YOU!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from a solid choice for long backpacking trips but could be lighter I've taken this pack on several 5-8 day backpacking+/-climbing trips, and it has always had capacity to spare. Despite being exposed to crazy rain and snow, I've not noticed any frank leakage. It rests quite comfortably on my back even with up to 14 kg in it. The internal load compression strap has proven quite useful; it has made others jealous. The belts tend to run large; fortunately, the Moosejaw people are awesome, so they allowed me to get a small belt with my medium pack (At the time, I was 70 kg and 178 cm.). This pack does have some unnecessary extras, so I will likely replace it with an ultralight pack in the near future. We’ve had a good run....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first born will be named after this product. I think Aether would be a strong name, like this pack. I love it, Osprey outdid themselves. I first fell in love with this pack after seeing the duffle style zipper on the front. And my heart will forever be sold after i used that front opening on the trail. I bought the large, i'm a big man. And sometimes getting your hip belt tight enough can be tough. the ergo pulls on this pack make it easy. A guy at my local outdoor shop, (Moosejaw in Ann Arbor 300 miles away) Called this pack the cadilac of backpacks and he was right. it has alot of nice features, but it's incredibly simple, which is great for essentialist hikers like me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They made it better??? I bought the older version of this pack to replace a pack that was just outright cumbersome. This pack is amazing, it feels empty when properly adjusted. I thought the airscape backpanel seemed silly, but it does keep the air flowing to your back to keep the bodily condensation down. There aren't a ton of pockets to speak of, but it's fine the bare minimum is what I prefer. The removable lumbar pack is a bit of a waste of what could have been a cool idea. Everything on the pack just seems to be designed with simplicity & comfort in mind. I just can't believe Osprey improved upon something I thought was already perfect. I guess the colours are better now too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Low weight, great carry, very versatile. Perfect alpine or extended trip back pack. All you need! This is the perfect pack. Just big enough for winter gear but light enough for summit bids in one unit. Compresses way down. I was worried how well it would carry but did fine in the whites loaded with a VE 25 and winter gear. It's no frills hip belt is awsome. I almost went argon but tried this first. 5lb killer is what it is. I loaded it on a training hike with 70 lbs and it hauled it all day with little discomfort. Its got all the right stuff. I will be getting a ariel 75 for my woman as well. I would really try this before you drop 400 on a heavier pack. I will be taking this to Rainier this summer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Big "Sack" to hold lots of Gear for extended treks This pack is very good, holding up to the abuse of Zaleski State Forest and 50+ pounds of gear this past weekend. The multiple pockets worked great to maintain gear organization, with easy systematic access! Wish I had purchased the hydration pack and extra gear pockets when I bought it at Ann Arbor Moosejaw. When buying this pack, purchase the pack cover, you will be thankful ,keeps tree sap off at night and gear dry during foul weather. The only con was the belt would loosen up and slide down my hips. Will be going on a 10 Day hiking expidition to New Mexico in June this will be the true test.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks So Good I bought this pack in the Magma Orange. I try not to be so shallow as to think that the color is important, but it does look REALLY nice in person. I sometimes wish there were more internal compartments, but rarely ever run into a situation where that is particularly important. I love the separate sleeping bag compartment at the bottom and the fact that it is actually connected to the greater part of the bag. I mostly use this for all kinds of gear that I want really quick access to. I might be wrong, but I imagine that I look really cool wearing this pack on the trail...or in my bathroom.
