Osprey Airscape

Osprey Airscape
Osprey's AirScape™ mesh covered ridge foam backpanels set a new standard in the industry. With its ability to keep the weight close, provide cushion, allow ventilation and add load carry is quite a list of needs from this unassuming backpanel. It successfully accomplished all of that in a way that allows it to be used in the large gear hauling packs and lightweight day hiking packs.

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Design is tall and narrow. 07/24/2016 I was surprised that this pack as so narrow that I could not fit my BearVault 500. It would not slide down to the bottom or the middle. Luckily the it could barely be squeezed into the top. My previous pack, Arcterryx Khamsin 62, was chosen to fit the bulky BearVault. My wife has an older Ariel 65, and the BearVault fits in easily. Apparently a re-design made all the packs narrower and TALLER. The two inches in increased frame height makes it impossible (even without a helmet) to look up merely with only a tip of the neck. I now have to lean the torso back. Does anybody find this trade-off height vs pack width a practical improvement?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from large capacity, convenient for causal travel, comfortable I bought this several months ago and have been pleased with its performance. Very convenient for use as a travel bag when you want to be able to just get up and go. The hipbelt is quite comfortable and the pack, aside from the chest clip, has been durable. It holds an incredible amount of stuff. The J zipper is very convenient. I've loaded it up with about 35 pounds and it's been quite comfortable. Generally solid construction, especially the zippers. Compresses well. The sleeping pad pocket is useful for shoes/wet clothes or anything else you want to separate from the main compartment. ,,,,Negatives: no hipbelt or shoulder strap pockets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Packs like a horse and tough as a rhino! I'm the kind of guy that likes to blaze his own trail on a mountain. The view from the summit is so much better than the trails. But having this philosophy sometimes gets me into trouble. This pack has fallen down mountains, slid down snow banks and fumbled down gulleys. I've hauled a week’s load in the pack and strapped burled logs to the back (I make log furniture in my spare time) and it holds up to it all! The features are great and especially love the harness and belt. The adjustability makes it able to go from weekend capacity the week long with moving 2 straps. With sizes able to fit anyone, there is no reason not to get this pack

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another apendage This pack is light and yet crazy tough. I've had it nawed on by dogs and pack rats and yet it's stood up. I worked as a wilderness therapist guide - so we had to live outdoors eight days at a time living and breathing nature. This pack can be slept on. this pack can be converted into a small day pack and yet you can add to this pack so much that It can be used in the crazy winter to hold all your gear, food, and more. The shoulder straps are not to cushy - just perfect. You'll find no better hip belt than the one made for osprey. The bag just becomes another apendage. It's worth more than it sells for and will out last your good times!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The sexiest backpack on the market There are many backpacks on the market that compare to this one, but for the price and the spaciousness, nothing even comes close to the Aether 70. I am 5'8 and have 31' waistline. I bought the medium pack with medium shoulder straps and a medium belt. I could have went with the small belt, but there is enough room to sinch it tight to my body. In my opinion, there is no sexier looking backpack on the market. The color options are the coolest that I have ever seen. The rainflys are pretty cool to. I bought a medium for my pack and will fit it snug with a full pack. Great engenuity all the way around, even down to the built-in whistle on the chest buckle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Tall Guys!! I'm a 6'6" 210lb Badass Mo Fo, & I've been on a few ill conceived, unprepared adventures. Therefore, it was time for Your Daddy to upgrade. Well this XL Aether 70 Pack has totally met my expectations. It's well worth the price and has enough features to cover the greenhorn to seasoned explorer. It's safe to say I will never have to invest in another pack for the rest of my days. ,,,,The detachable day pack is extremely handy and the external pocket is great to quarantine that messy tent of yours. You know your tent is gonna get dirty don't kid yourself.,,,,For once it's nice to find something that fits/works for tall people.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Extremely comfortable pack, worth the extra weight This pack is very, very comfortable carrying loads of 45+ lbs. There are packs out there that weigh substantially less, but when it comes to comfort this pack cannot be underestimated. The hip belt is the best I have ever used. I recently went backpacking across Jefferson national forest and this pack was a pleasure to carry. It can clearly take some punishment without failing. I do wish it had pockets on the hip belt so you could easily stow a camera or a few energy bars, but the overhead pocket is sufficient. I wouldn't use it for a thru hike due to its weight, but for other extended/weekend trips this is my go to pack. Very pleased with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a great & comfortable bag! I've bought this bag two months, I had no chance to use it until last weekend, a two day camping trip. I put all my clothes, tent, food, cook set, slippers...etc in it, but the bag still have a lot of space, maybe 70L backpack suitable for the longer trip. In this trip I walked about 10km, and I don't feel tired(my pack is about 40lbs), it's because this pack is very comfortable, especially the hipbelt, and an unluck thing happen in the second day, a heavy rainfall when I leave, I use the osprey raincover immediately, when I came home, I check my pack,amazing... it's still dry in the pack's inside, so I love this pack, and I am planning use it to go a longer trip.
