The Osprey Ace 48 Pack is a hiking backpack specifically designed for youth. This pack is not just a smaller version of an adult's pack: it is specifically proportioned for the backs of youth 12 to 16 years old. Custom fit options are aplenty thanks to the adjustable torso length system. Load lifter straps and a hipbelt featuring an ErgoPull closure ensure ultimate comfort. Also features sewn-in retractable sleeping bag straps, bungee tool tie-offs, and a large vertical zip front panel pocket. This pack is also hydration compatible and an integrated raincover keeps gear dry. There's a reason this awesome pack was chosen for the Editor's Choice Award in 2009 from Backpacking Magazine. And I think it is safe to assume the people at Backpacking Magainze could be considered experts when it comes to judging packs.

OSPREY MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

HOW TO MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW TO MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice pack, the most comfortable one I own The Osprey Ace is light (about 3 lb. 14 ounces), comfortable and big enough for a 2-3 day trip. The Ace is around 48 liters but I could fit a weekends worth of gear inside (sleeping bag, clothing that I didn't use, a sack o' potatoes, corn, freeze dried lasagna and a cook kit).,,The 2 pockets on the hip straps are very useful and moderately accessible. It has a double brain and a large front pocket, both of which I stuffed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top quality youth pack. Great adjustability! This pack will can fit my 8 year old son and my wife(5' 6", weight ???)! Used on a years worth of boy Scout outings with my 12 year old son. Including a five night Pictured Rocks trek, he was able to carry a fully outfitted load. Expect to get a long life from this and many miles on the trail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would recommend this product. I purchased this backpack for 11 year old son, who is now actively involved in scouting. I looked at other comparable packs, like the Gregory Wander and the comparable North Face, Kelty and other brand-named products. After my son tried on these different packs, we determined that the Osprey was the best fit. We went with this pack. The included rain fly is nice. My son is very excited.,,,,I have read in various places on the web that a target size should be 50-70 liters. Initially, this larger size seemed to make sense, as my son is still growing and will be using this pack for several years. But when my son tried the packs on with weight, my perspective changed as to the larger packs. They did not fit him as well, and he was hunched over when the same were weighted down. The Osprey 48 fit the best. And it seems clear that the Osprey 48 will be plenty big for the next couple of years, and that any pack with more than 48 liters would simply be too much weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pack Got this for my son. Very adjustable so he'll be able to use it for years to come. It will adjust big enough so I can even use it for day hikes I'd need be.
