Great stove, self-contained and multi-fuel. A bit big and heavy for backpacking, though...I have used Optimus stoves since my time in the military, starting with a 199 Ranger, a smaller and lighter sibling to this current version. Great stoves, dependable and rebuildable. Definitely not disposable and can last you and yours a lifetime of service. You can simmer with it, but not as easily as with other stoves. One tank of fuel usually lasts me a week of camping with regular use. Also built right in is a quirky fun factor, for the nostalgic in all of us. It has that, "they just don't make 'em like this anymore" feel to them; well, except for the fact that they do make 'em like this right now. And you can own one. Camp safe and carry a big little stove. ;)

Old schoolThe 8R was my first stove 35 years ago. It was great then, but the concept is way out of date today. A third of the weight of this unit is the box. You don't need it and it does not make a very good base (although it does get gooked up with any boil over gunk). By it for nostalgia. If you want functionality, get a Whisperlight.

Hell with all those funkie looking things. Give me a classic. No, I don't have this one. I have the original 8R with it's beautiful brass tank. I bought 36 years ago and it's still working great. No, I'm not one of you big time hikers but I love my stove. When I'm huntin' it's nice to have something hot. And it helps teach my daughter to get out in it. It is a must have in your sac.
