"An actual waterproof soft shell" 12/15/11
It's really a rain shell in disguise, having that sturdy nylon cover over a laminated waterproof/breathable membrane instead of just DWR that most soft shell jackets have. My problem with soft shell jackets is that they fail, reliably, after a few months to a year as the DWR wears off or gets dirty. Then you have an expensive windbreaker. Oh, and the velcro cuffs are horrible, failing after just a few uses because they have only tiny tabs of velco exposed. MH will replace these with full strips of Velcro if you want though. IMO it's too bad that the design team didn't just test this before shipping.
"Great All Around Jacket" 04/22/11
Have had this jacket for several months. Replaced my older north face soft shell. Definetly a worthwhile upgrade. The DWR finish is still kicking strong despite feet of snow here on the east coast. The shell is durable and can take more of a beating than I would have guessed (several slips and slides on rocks without ever tearing). There isn't too much actual insulation to this jacket so you have to layer up a bit when the temps drop. I am 6'2" and 175lbs and a medium suits me fine as long as i dont have too much bulk underneath.
"A Great Soft Shell Jacket!" 04/05/11
Provided great protection from rain and wind, I love this jacket for hiking and everyday use. I'm 5'6'' and weigh 144 pounds and got a small, which was not as long as I hoped but it also wasn't too short to be a big problem. This was the first ever jacket I got from Mountain Hardwear, and to this day I'm thankful for one of my buddies suggesting the brand for a soft shell jacket. If you're looking for something functional, comfortable, and of great quality, then I'm flattered that you're looking at my review, but you should probably buy this jacket.
"Great jacket. Specific use." 03/21/11
Shorter-length jacket with pockets that open high. Perfect for climbing, for freedom of movement. Still a great all-round jacket, windproof , great DWR. Looks spiff too. The external seam seals, not sure if they are better performing necessarily but work well. They have little knobbins that are a little grippy though, can be annoying if that is not what you expect.Due to snug fit/short length, runs a little smaller for non-geek around-town use. I sized up to L.
"Solid Fall/Spring and Winterish Softshell" 02/04/11
Wore this jacket for the first time today in 30 degree temps in upstate NY. So far no complaints, wasn't too hot and wasn't too cold. If it were any colder or snowing I probably wouldn't have worn this, but so far so good. Definitely a good pickup when its on sale!!!!
"Its the Bomb!" 11/06/10
So you want to know if the jacket is any good -- Its Great! You even look good just lounging around in it - but then it is not very warm. BUT If you plan to be active in cold weather -- you can't beat it -- it breaths well, it keeps the wind off of you as well as rain/snow. And it is durable, even when bushwacking through bramble. I've had one for over 2 years and came back to pick up a second one. Mountain Hardware has a good one here. The fit is athletic -- snug if you put multiple layers on (mid-wt fleece plus a heavy base layer). If that is your cup of tea then order the next size up.
"A good jacket, but not at all versatile." 10/26/10
This is an anomaly as far as softshell jackets go. It is waterproof and seam taped, which is unusual, however, it's not nearly as breathable as most, and it's ridiculously short. This jacket should be used for climbing and that's about it. It's the right length to fit under a harness, but if you're backpacking, or just sitting around even, the jacket rides up above your waist and doesn't cover your whole torso. The insulation is also very light, so don't count on it as a winter softshell, or even a fleece replacement. If you need a jacket for climbing, it doesn't get much better than this, otherwise, look elsewhere. I'm 5'9" 140lbs, the small fits perfectly except for the length.
"Badass jacket for all outdoors people" 04/25/10
I walked right out of the store with this shell and made my way to the Shetland Islands. No matter how rainy or windy it got on those wind torn barren hillsides i was always comfortable. This jacket is an impenetrable force to be reckoned with!
