I took this on a winter camping and cross-country skiing trip to Glacier National Park at the end of February 2014. I wore it around camp and any time we stopped; it fit in the pocket of my soft shell when packed down, then was easy to pull out and put on. It packs into its own pocket without much effort (amaze your friends!) and has enough down that it quickly lofts up to provide good warmth. The outer fabric does a good job of blocking wind and repelling driving snow, and is warm enough that (with a mid weight base layer and my soft shell) I was warm enough down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or so while standing around camp at night. I also took it to Wisconsin in early March right after the Glacier trip. It was around 15 degrees, and this jacket was fine over my light slacks and light polo shirt (no base layers) for walking five blocks or so.
This is an extremely light warm jacket but do not use it as an outer layer. I had a similar jacket a few years ago from I think Northface that developed multiple tears but I used it as a jacket alone. This jacket is soo light that I fear the same will happen so I always have something over it. Otherwise the orange is super cool and this is a great jacket. A bit pricy but MJ sometimes has sales.
"Super duper cool at first, then like an old car she broke down on me"
Initially I loved this jacket as much as an elephant loves a peanut. It was warm, lightweight, and trim fitting. However after 2 months of casual use the zipper at the bottom of the jacket has given out. Now I look funny walking down the street with it zipped up around my neck and not around my waist. I would consider buying again, but there are some quality issues to be aware of.
I have been looking for a good jacket for when I visit my family in Mass. I live in LA. After spending a few weeks reading reviews and looking at options, I went with the Ghost Whisperer. Has been a great decision. I have only had it for a few weeks but fits very well. In the morning I take my dog out to the bathroom and the average temp as been around 34. I go out wearing just the jacket and pants. The jacket has kept me so warm. I can not even tell it is in the 30s. A good jacket.
If you are looking for the lightest of the light, this jacket is for you. It is the current king of the UL down jackets I believe and it sure is well-designed, comfy, warm, and oh so stylin! Go for the "radiance" color if you dare!
I just received my Ghost Whisperer jacket and my initial impression is very positive. It is unbelievably even lighter than my already featherweight Patagonia Ultralight. The fit is true to size and very similar to other Mountain Hardwear jackets. I'm 5'9" with a muscular build and the Large fits me perfect. The Deep Water color is definitely brighter in person than in the Moosejaw pic. A bit flashier than expected but no big deal. Though I have yet to test it out in colder climates, it seems quite warm despite its super light weight. Overall construction and quality is first-rate so I have no qualms giving this jacket a BIG thumbs up!
