With the creation of the BRD by Metolius, we have achieved a simple, safe and bombproof belay/rappel device. The principle behind the BRD is very simple: as the load of a falling climber is applied, the carabiner is pulled into the scientifically engineered rope slots and the rope is squeezed between the carabiner and the BRD. The result is that a tremendous amount of friction is generated, allowing the belayer to easily catch long, hard falls with relatively light hand pressure. For rappelling, the BRD will give you a relatively slow and controlled (and we feel safer) rappel. If the rappel is moving too slowly, you can re-orient the device for a speedier descent.
FEATURES of the Metolius BRD - Belay Rappel Device
A versatile, lightweight belay/rappel device with engineered rope slots that give the belayer added control by increasing friction on the rope
Single or double rope compatible (8 mm to 11 mm ropes)
Increased thermal mass and cooling fins to dissipate heat
Anodized for longer wear
CNC machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum
Available with or without the Element locking carabiner

Super smooth - like silky smooth even with tough and beat up gym ropes.First of all, it just looks cool (I got the green and yellow one), that way I can spot it even in the dark. Secondly, it is a BRD, which is a super STRONG name (not like the weaker atc or gri-gri). Thirdly, it belays super smoothly. In fact, when I belay my kids at the gym, I don't have to feed the rope into the BRD - it feeds like a dream. Lastly, it catches falls lightning fast - I have an OCUN brand ATC and it lets a good 4-6 slip before it locks down - the BRD snaps quickly and catches my falling partner. The only flaw is weighs about 42lbs. No, not really, but it is a little heavier than other similar devices. Strong recommend!

Hate this thingI hate this device. Not only does it feel like a child put it together, but also doesn't feed ropes easily and handles real janky. For the cheapest option...here you go, but for something quality, definitely look elsewhere 'cuz you won't find it here. This is only good for top rope belaying really with not gym-sized ropes which it often is used for. I'm really disappointed that Metolius even makes this thing instead of something more quality.

An all-around easy to use belay/rappel device. I'll buy another when it's time to retire this one.Great belay device. Doesn't take much to stop your climber from falling. The plate disperses heat pretty well, haven't burned my fingers after a belay/rappel yet. If it locks up, just press the tab...pretty cool feature. The only downside is it gives a slow rap. BUT if you're looking for rap speed, you should be using a figure 8.

Heavy but perfect for a day of single pitchesThis is alot heavier than the others but it locks up ultra fast. (Sometimes to fast). I haven't noticed it heating up nearly as much as the others. Maybe the grooves work or it could be because its alot more metal. Excellent for belaying and repelling. Kinda hangs up when your trying to feed slack.

Useful, sexy, belay on!This belay device is the bees knees! You couldn't ask for a better one. I got a gold top with a yellow cord, its super sexy. It's easy to use and has a little picture if you need a reminder. It's just right for all your belaying needs.

Not that great with fatter ropesI have a 10.2 cord and trying to feed it through this thing is like trying to milk a donkey. Cant say how it works with thinner ropes, but if you like to use workhorse fatty ropes I don't think this is the device for you.
