With the creation of the BRD by Metolius, we have achieved a simple, safe and bombproof belay/rappel device. The principle behind the BRD is very simple: as the load of a falling climber is applied, the carabiner is pulled into the scientifically engineered rope slots and the rope is squeezed between the carabiner and the BRD. The result is that a tremendous amount of friction is generated, allowing the belayer to easily catch long, hard falls with relatively light hand pressure. For rappelling, the BRD will give you a relatively slow and controlled (and we feel safer) rappel. If the rappel is moving too slowly, you can re-orient the device for a speedier descent.

"Super smooth - like silky smooth even with tough and beat up gym ropes." 		          03/17/09
First of all, it just looks cool (I got the green and yellow one), that way I can spot it even in the dark. Secondly, it is a BRD, which is a super STRONG name (not like the weaker atc or gri-gri). Thirdly, it belays super smoothly. In fact, when I belay my kids at the gym, I don't have to feed the rope into the BRD - it feeds like a dream. Lastly, it catches falls lightning fast - I have an OCUN brand ATC and it lets a good 4-6 slip before it locks down - the BRD snaps quickly and catches my falling partner. The only flaw is weighs about 42lbs. No, not really, but it is a little heavier than other similar devices. Strong recommend!

Great belay device. Doesn't take much to stop your climber from falling. The plate disperses heat pretty well, haven't burned my fingers after a belay/rappel yet. If it locks up, just press the tab...pretty cool feature. The only downside is it gives a slow rap. BUT if you're looking for rap speed, you should be using a figure 8.

This belay device is the bees knees! You couldn't ask for a better one. I got a gold top with a yellow cord, its super sexy. It's easy to use and has a little picture if you need a reminder. It's just right for all your belaying needs.
