Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the best midlayer This is the best midlayer jacket I have ever had. Perfect 3 season usability. Kept me warm and protected during my month and a half expedition through the Absaroka Mountains and Wind River Wilderness. Amazing flexibility while I paddled and fished all types of waterways. Whatever the weather or situation is I am always packing this jacket. I am ~6'3 and ~200lbs, the large in this fits perfectly over my base layers. It is not too bulky to prevent additional layering and is breathable enough that I do not hesitate to layer up early if bad weather is around the corner. This jacket has convinced me to look into other Marmot gear. Please do not stop making this jacket Marmot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good second layer The variant jacket is very light and comfortable, so it is quite useful for practising sports as a second layer of clothing behind your skying jacket or just over your training shirt. It keeps you warm but is not to be used as a wind stopper, as a light breeze will make you shiver. The holes in the sleeves are quite helpful for running outdoors as they keep your hands warm without the need of gloves. I also wear it in my jeans, as for the trendy and sporty way I feel myself in it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Winter Running made fun I have had this Jacket for a full year now and am back here to buy another color I liked it so much. I am an avid runner and purchased this jacket for PA winter running. 5'8 162lbs - medium is perfect for me. I have run in sub 0 temps with this and a layer or 2 underneath. When its just normal cold (20-39 degrees) I usually have a long sleeve tech underneath. I start out a tad chilly but warm up quick enough. It is not extremely effective when windy but I use a wind shirt underneath on those days. This jacket has been through an awful lot of sweaty runs and the resulting washes my wife insists upon (probably 40-50 so far) the material is holding up well -- still "stretchy" and no lingering odors. In the fall I use it as a hiking jacket when needed as it is relatively packable. I am not an ultralight hiker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite Jacket I am about to replace my 4-5 year old Variant jacket with a new one because it's finally starting to wear out a bit. I wear it all the time and it has held up extremely well-- in fact, I could probably repair it (the cuffs are coming apart), but I really just want to go with a new color. I'm 6' 220 lbs and the XL is a perfect fit. I find most jackets are too warm-- especially if I'm active-- so this is perfect for almost any weather for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My most versatile jacket in My most versatile jacket in my closet- I bought this jacket thinking that I would only use it on those bluebird mornings skiing, when my Zeus jacket would be too much. It works great for this application, however one day I found myself needing one more layer that didn't restrict my freedom of movement one harsh near white out day in northern Arizona (yes it snows here too!). So I added this jacket as a mid layer and it worked great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect This is the quintacintial jacket for active use as well as cruising around town. I purchased the Small and at 5'8", 128lbs. it is the perfect fit with a great athletic cut.  I clocked 70 miles running this week with temps averaging 15 degrees and only had a single layer underneath and found absolute equilibrium in body temp.  I can be very selective about what I run in but hands down this is the perfect tool for my trade!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome mid layer/mild season jacket! I love this jacket. Fits tight. Warm, but not on windy days by itself, the back side and arms are chilly in cold/windy days IF you wear it solo. That would be stupid though, so layer it under a softshell and you're in biz. I also own the Zion soft shell and the Variant is PERFECT under it!!!! Totally awesome looking on; love this jacket. I'm 6'2", 220 and I wear an XL and it's snug but not uncomfortable at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits like a glove Love this jacket, bought the XXL, at 6'3" 285lbs. it fits like a glove. I use it mostly for walking in the evenings, keeps you warm but not hot. When it gets colder (past October) I will use it as an additional layer. I'm ready to buy another one in a different color. Love the color as well (Cobalt Blue/Blue Night), plan on buying the Sunset Orange/Black.
