Product Description Item No.   10085397

The new Smart assisted-belay device by Mammut offers unparalleled safety and ease of use for cragging, all in a lightweight and inexpensive package. The unique design combines very easy rope management making feeding a huge armload of slack for that hard clip easy, with a super-dependable locking feature that makes catching a hard fall very easy, even with ultra-skinny ropes. A side benefit is that this locking action makes marathon belay sessions easy while while your partner dogs his project for the upmpteenth time. Not for use as an autoblocking belay device.

FEATURES of the Mammut Smart

  • Its intuitive operation and clever handling make the Smart equally popular among both indoor and sport climbers
  • It dynamically brakes the climber in an accidental fall and locks even at low levels of force exerted by the user
  • In situations where the user has a sudden shock, the function corresponds to the reflex movements of the human body
  • The improved geometry of the carabiner opening allows comfortable releasing of the lead climber
  • Suitable for all current HMS carabiners and single ropes from 8.7 to 10.5 mm in diameter

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value I like this device, it works a lot like a regular ATC, so its not hard to use.,,,,For the price i don't think you will find a better auto locking belay out there. Its not quite as good as a grigri when it comes to lowering, but now that i have this (and my friend finally took his gri back) ill be happy to hook this up for all my belay needs... until a grigri magically appears in my gear bag.,,,,Bottom line is if your looking for something better than an ATC but are strapped for cash, this is for you. If you already have a grigri then i would pass on this unless you want it just to have a kinda weird looking bit of gear to show to your friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best kept secret out there!!!!!! Seriously this is like a cheap grigri for all intensive purposes! More specifically, it catches a fall much better than an atc/fig 8/plate... and if you keep the nose end pointed straight down your partner can hang dog all day long with no strain to your hands! So, while it is not an auto locker, it accomplishes the same things. I cant wait for the double version to come out!,,,,Cons, initially it is a bit strange to lower (jerky) but once you get the hang of it it becomes second nature.,,,,The value of this baby really shows when you try an atc again. This thing is awesome. Seriously I don't know why they are not more popular!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic belay device My gym does not allow auto-locking devices but lets me use the Smart and it's an absolute life saver (for me and my climber). I usually climb with guys who have 20-50 lbs. gain over me and it's extremely difficult to belay with an ATC even if I am ground anchored (I've gotten bad rope burn from rope slippage belaying with an ATC when a guy with about 60+ lbs. gain over me took a huge lead fall). With a Smart, I know I don't have to worry about rope slippage and can focus more on positioning myself properly when my climber may take a fall. However, I only use the Smart in the gyms that do not allow auto-locking devices, for outdoor climbing I prefer auto-locking devices.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great device for the price and what it does I've only used mine for a full day at the crag so far, but love it. I like the security of how it locks off easily and dynamically. Locked securely on my new (read: slippery) 10mm rope. Great for new belayers after a quick instruction set. ,,Read the directions and you shouldn't have any problem lowering smoothly. Make sure to use two hands and my climbers can't even feel when I release it from lock now. ,,Simplicity of a non-mechanical device like and tube, yet near auto-locking convenience of a grigri style device without the price. Remember its marketed at auto-assist and not auto-lock, but one should always have their brake hand on the rope no matter what device you are using.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for top-ropeing on a budget. At the gym or at your local crag, I love the smart for top-roping. It's so easy to use, basically the same motions as the ATC-type device we all started on, that you don't even have to think. It's best feature in my opinion is it's auto-locking feature, sudden falls are caught easily and my girlfriend can hangdog all day with no effort on my part to hold her up. Overall, this is just a great device. It has a certain usage (mainly top-roping and sport climbing on single ropes) but it does a great job with auto-locking features at a price that is almost a third of a grigri or similar auto-locking device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding piece of equipment - Inexpensive not cheap I'm not as young as most of you LOL, but man do I love this sport. Anyway, I'm active with the Boys Scouts and volunteered to help out at the Kiwanis Boys Scout climbing tower in Mason from 8 am until 4 pm. this past weekend. My hands got plenty tired being on belay for hours and hours. I had brought along my Mammut Smart Belay Devise... Man-o-Man what a great piece of equipment. This is one very reliable auto assist belay device with great stopping power.. The Mammut Smart Belay devise Inexpensive not cheap and light weight. I demonstrated it to the Lead Climbing Instructor, who was so impressed that he will be recommending that Council purchase these for future use. Belay is on. Climb on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this thing The Mammut Smart is in a default state of auto lock. In the context of top roping, insofar as enough rope slack has been taken as such that the Smart is perpendicular to your carabiner, it's autolocked. You belay as normally, but since after taking slack the Smart immediately returns to auto-lock state, the amount of wrist energy you save is enormous. ,,,,Also, the Smart is attached to your carabiner in a way similar to how an ATC would. So in the event of equipment failure, you can still emergency belay with your carabiner. Not so with the grigri.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product for the price I have used other people's grigri2 quite a bit and I was looking to get something similar of my own. However, I didn't have the cash to buy a grigri and while searching I stumbled upon this. No it doesn't function as well or even the same as a grigri. But, it works pretty great and I prefer it when sport climbing. Sometimes I would have issues with the grigri locking up when I want to give slack. With this I haven't had any problems. Overall, looks good, functions great, and it's relatively cheap.
