Popular belay device for both indoor and sport climbers
Dynamically brakes the climber in an accidental fall and locks even at low levels of force exerted by the user
In the event of sudden shock, the function corresponds to the reflex movements of the human body
Improved geometry of the carabiner opening allows comfortable releasing of the lead climber
Suitable for all current HMS carabiners and single ropes from 8.7 to 10.5 mm in diameter
Ideal for sports, gym, training/workout, and top rope climbing
*Please note that this is NOT a "hands-off" belay device. The brake-end of the rope must be controlled at all times, and this is merely an "assisted braking device", where the device will function in a way that a portion, not all, of the braking power is done by the device itself. Also, the device is not intended to hold the rope with a 100% positive "stop", as there is some slip built into the device to facilitate a dynamic belay. Sorry to be so mean about it, but this is super serious stuff.

NOT FOR THIN ROPE! Works well on thicker rope.It failed to catch my supple 9.5mm Petzl Arial dry rope without a break hand. With normal break hand pressure, it did eventually catch but kept slowly slipping. It took 20-30lbs of break hand pull to stop any slipping. When testing a very stiff 10mm rope, it caught and held very well with or without break hand pressure.
This device shows promise, but the soft 9.5mm Petzl Arial with a slippery dry treatment compressed to be much thinner in the device, and failed to gain enough grip. The very stiff 10mm rope compressed much less when going around the friction bars, and held perfectly without a break hand, just like in the demo videos.
The device is rated for ropes down to 8.9mm. I wouldn't dare use it on any soft 9.5mm rope or thinner. Test your rope in the device with full body weight before using.

Work as advertised. The Mammut Smart Belay is a great little belay device. The main thing I want to focus on in the price to performance ratio of this device. I picked mine up from Moosejaw for only 24 bucks on sale. For 24 bucks, the performance is amazing. Some pros and cons:,,,,Pros:,,Cheap,,Auto-locking,,Light,,Easy to use,,,,Cons:,,Not very versatile ,,Giving rope can be tricky,,,,Overall I would say this is a great belay device for a beginner or gym climber. Great for those partners that ask for long takes and fall often. It will always catch a fall even if the belayer is experienced or not paying attention. It lacks a lot of features, but if you want more u should check out the big brother product the Mammut smart alpine. This is by far the cheapest auto locking belay device out there, I highly recommend it.

Amazing deviceThis guy is great. Although this version lacks the ability to belay from the top, if you're doing single pitch climbs of any-type, this is a no brainer for a choice. The locking feature is great and really makes belaying feel more secure. Also, in order to assist in lowering at a stable rate, the handle is perfect. I absolutely love using this device and if I did not already have a belay device with belay-from-the-top capabilities, this would be my choice.

Great. Locks. Light. Cheap. Compact. Concise.People say it's hard to lead belay with this. It's not. Read the simple 3 step instructions and it works like a charm. I learned to pay out slack fast after literally one practice belay. Get one. That said, it does slip/feed ever so slightly with a thin rope around 9.8 with heavy climber when there's minimal rope drag. Not a problem because they will live and not deck

Basically idiot proof. The smart belay is a perfect step up from just a basic belay. Its much cheaper than a gri gri and not much more expensive than a basic belay. It is easy to learn how to work and runs smoothly. The only not amazing part about it is that it takes a little bit to get used to when you are letting someone rappel down, but other than that it is perfect!

Nice sometimesI got this belay device after having used a friends inside for about a month. On tope rope it works well as long as you set up your carabiner appropriately. Otherwise the rope will cross and lock inside of the device and you're stuck. The assisted locking is nice and effective. THe larger size is better for sport, feeds smoother.

Better than a grigriUse it for top and leading. In my opinion it's better than a grigri or atc. To feed out slack is fast and easy. It locks up automatically when climber falls, and there's no risk of holding the brake down like a grigri

Great jacketMy daughter loves this jacket. It is perfect for a light cool night or a activity that needs a little protection, but not too much bulk. It looks great, fits well and it is, well... a North Face product.
