The MSR XGK EX is an expedition-proven stove that's trusted by mountaineers for reliable performance in extreme conditions. When you're far above the treeline and away from any rivers or streams, you'll be grateful for the uncompromising performance as you melt snow at high altitude. Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is as amazing as it is loud I received this as a gift and it is amazing. I have only used it with white gas so far, but I will use it with more fuels soon. It has no functional draw backs. It is loud but this isn't an electric range, so it's supposed to make some noise. The serrated legs are an overlooked feature that puts it above the dragonfly model. My buddy has a dragonfly and you must watch for pots to slide off the smooth legs. This doesn't happen with this pot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This stove burns anything, anywhere with great heat output I've owned the MSR xgk ex for 2 years. This stove will burn anything and it does so well. It folds up nicely to a compact size however you must also have the fuel bottle and the pump to make it burn. Not the best stove for the quick summer trip but it will do the job and do it well. This stove is designed for the higher altitudes, the cold and the wind. In those harsh conditions the extra ounces of equipment and fuel will pay for itself the first time it's fired up. This stove outperforms all others in versatility and speed. I use it for all my mountaineering, and cold weather camping. I would recommend it to any serious outdoorsman.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazingly Durable and Dependable I have had my MSR XGK EX stove for over five years and, aside from clogged fuel filters have never had a problem with it. It just came back from its second trip to Nepal; a total of roughly 80 trekking/camping days where it was expected to preform flawlessly on a diet of old and dirty kerosene; asked to operate at full output for ridiculous periods of time while cooking five liters of rice every night; lived above 15,000 feet for long periods, and was subjected to endless durability testing by our porters day-after-day, week-after-week. The XGK endured all of this without a single issue (well, do take spare fuel filters if you plan to trek in Nepal) and will be returning to Nepal with us this fall. By the way, I particularly like XGK's wide stable stance and, willingness to support a far larger pot than one should reasonably expect, as well as its no nonsense high heat output.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable I bought my first XGK in the early 1980's for spring mountaineering in the Alps. But I soon learned to use it for every trip. Loss resulted in a new XGKII around 1994 which has nourished me everywhere from sub-tropical jungle to wintering on the slopes of 4000m peaks. I never could master the simmering, it does take patience, but my wife always turns out a great gourmet meal, no matter our location or how many nights on the trail. But MSR make such a great range of apparently reliable stoves now, that it might not be my first choice for general backpacking/trekking today. But if you want something that seems to be built like a tank, that seems to burn anything, that you can service half way up a mountain, that never lets you down when you need that hot drink or meal. And all of those things are more important to you than cooking on something that works like your kitchen stove, then this is the stove to use. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best liquid stove ever A the beginning it was hard to understand how to make this stove to work, but once you got it right, you can see yourself as a master- just like riding a bike. at the same breath, this stove its not ideal for day trips, ist bulky, stinky and heavy. to complete the picture you need to buy a compact small canister stove like the "Pocketrocket"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Stove I can not find any boil test on this stove bringing ice or snow to a boil. I mean you would not take this stove on a summer backpacking trip, I would bring my msr reator. But for winter the xgk is my stove of choice. I hope my test helps you figure how much fuel to bring.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great stove for extended trips in the mountains! I really like the stove, but it is very loud and difficult to regulate the flame. Other than that, it is very fuel efficiënt, burns on almost anything and works well on altitude. Ideal for melting snow!
