"Good for mountaineering, not for comfort trips." 10/16/11
This stove is hard to be clogged, but seems to be capable of only ON and OFF. Poor temperature control and difficult to light. Get this stove for boiling water/melting. Don't get it if you want a stove you can cook on. If you need more temperature control, take dragonfly. It’s better for the high-altitude adventurer - not the choice for the casual weekend camper.
"Makes me want to camp out and eat weird concoctions more often!" 04/11/11
I used this last April on a snow trip into Lassen National Park. I gotta say, the loude noise isnt a turn off for me. Especially when it quiets the bitching of your tent-mates. I'm pretty sure this model folds up which is a plus. Had a couple problems though, with it melting the snow underneath, and becoming lopsided. Then again, that may be our tecnique.
"This is the SHIT!" 01/30/11
Well it makes alot of noise that is the only negative. It will burn any liquid fuel. It will not fit a primus gas bottle. That can also be a negative. The pot base is superb and the trifoot stabilaty is as good as any camping stove will ever be made.
"Awesomely hot stove" 12/15/10
This is one of the best stoves I have ever used. It heats up quickly in any weather. my only issue is that it is too hot sometimes. It is almost quiet difficult to heat anything that isnt soup or water based without burning it. Overall however I would recommend this stove to everyone
"great stove for non -gourmet cooks" 12/11/10
been using a MSR Whisperlight for about 20 years. great stove. decided to purchase the MSR XGK just because. Like the whisperlight, the XGK lite quick and boiled faster. somewhat heavier than the whisperlight but more stable which is an important for me. two huge improvements over the whisperlight is the longer fuel line and an improved pump. if you are a gourmet cook, forget about the simmer as the XGK goes full out. read some complaints about how loud it is. so what. boils water in a bit under three minutes then turn if off. i completely expect this stove to last another 20 years.
"you want a quality stove, get this." 05/30/10
I just came back from a 4 night hike were i tested my new MSR XGX. The stove is awesome, if you haven’t used a stove like this before it may be a little difficult to use at first, but once you’ve got the hang of, you will love it! Boils water super quick and uses all different types of fuel. I can’t fault this product 10/10
"one hell of a stove" 05/02/10
I've used a MSR Whisperlite International so far. Recently bought the XGK EX - what a difference. It's easier to pack and burns very nicely and fast. It's also working great in higher altitudes as you'd expect it from a stove designed for expedition use. Be careful before your first use: by default it has the diesel needle installed. The stove nests perfectly in a MSR standard 1.5L pot. Bottom line: a great stove worth the MSR logo. [As always the stove comes with a fuel pump but without a fuel bottle]
"Hokey Pete this thing's awesome" 11/13/09
Awesome. This thing is a crazy boiler that is incredibly simple and consistent. It's super loud, and you can't really control the temp., but it boils water faster than anything i've seen. easy to clean, easy to maintain, easy enough to prime/start. everybody around you will think you're taking off when you light it up. i wouldn't take anything else up a mountain.
