The MSR WhisperLite Stove has been a staple in the industry for over 25 years. 25 years is a lot of years. That's like 175 years in dog years. That's an old dog. Simplicity and reliability, that's how you survive in the industry for that long. The first stove I ever used was a WhisperLite and it was a breeze right out of the box. It runs on white gas, which is the cleanest burning type of fuel and it is self-cleaning with a simple shake. Comes with the fuel pump, windscreen and heat reflector.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If i had to choose one, this would be it. This stove works great if you don't mind a little set up time. While not as fast to set up and cook as say a Jetboil or Pocketrocket, it excels at everything else. This stove is a must for base camp style assaults, winter camping or high altitude adventures. The MSR Whisperlite has been around a long time for a reason. Its does require some maintenance from time to time and people who like to work on gadgets will love this stove, the lazy not so much. You can get several different sizes of fuel canisters to help control weight savings if that's your thing. Overall its not too light but not too heavy. We shall call her Goldilocks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Winter Stove I bought this stove exclusively for winter use and it is exactly what I had hoped for. The liquid fuel is reliable in very cold weather. It was put to the test in negative degree temperatures overnight at Winter Mountaineering School in the Adirondacks and performed great. It is a little bulkier and heavier than I would prefer for the other three seasons, but if you need a reliable and efficient go-to stove this is a great choice. ,,,,Because it required priming and might be unfamiliar to new users, definitely test it before you go into the field. I know that is common sense, but that could be a big mistake in the winter! There are several good videos online if you are nervous about the priming and lighting. If you do it correctly, it is easy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely reliable and stands the test of time I used this stove quite a bit many years ago. Unfortunately I lost it in a divorce. I have recently returned to camping and was pleasantly surprised to see this little guy was still available. It still works the same as before, and that is a good thing - it is sturdy, easy to use, and reliable. Can't ask for much more than that. This model only burns "white fuel", which I prefer because it burns cleaner than a lot of other fuels. (Oh wait... did I mention that it is a good bit cheaper than a lot of the newer models?)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is my non-ultralight go-to stove. If I am going to do more than just boil water for rehydrating food (use a "bottle stove" for that) I like this stove above all others I have used or seen. Adequate flame control, excellent heat output, very stable, and can handle large groups.,,,,While it's not indestructible it is tough. My first lasted over a decade of abuse with a couple of pump rebuilds. Meshes well with other MSR gear, and other pot configurations. Could probably heat a wok well if it had to.,,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfect. Super simple. Cooked with this for the first time in Rocky Mountain National Park. First night was super windy, but thanks to the included windscreen, no problems! Used a nesting pot-set, and the burner held it perfectly...no rocking. Quick to light, and flame is nice and variable. Pump on the unit felt sturdy. No leaks, no mess. Can't wait to use this again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from #1 in Backpacking Stoves There is no denying that this isn't the lightest stove, but it makes up for that in just about every other category. It burns white gas that does require a fuel bottle (11 or 22 oz MSR bottle preferred), and it will run for several burns on a full bottle. All that is required is to attach the bottle to the stove and then prime the bottle. Then you just need to put a small about of alcohol or white gas from the stove and preburn the stove for about a minute. Once the flame is about to die down you can turn the stove on and start cooking.,,The Stove itself folds out to stand sturdy on 3 legs (you will need to find a flat and stable rock or spot on the ground). A stove stand/holder is available from MSR if desired, though it does add a bit more weight than it probably gains you in functionality. The stove also comes with a windscreen and a heat reflector made of thick aluminum foil material. These set up underneath and around the stove to provide extra efficiency.,,Go get 1!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great stove. While some things have changed about the WhisperLite (you used to have to clean the jet with a small pin), the basic design has remained the same for years. And while I've tried more expensive stoves such as the Optimus Nova, I've always found them more finicky than the WhisperLite. In addition to the WhisperLite's reliability, it's easy to set up and learn to use. I frequently teach groups to use these stoves in less than an hour. While the stove looks small, a cook group of four can cook with a 3-liter pot on it. The main difficulty that some people express about these stoves is the inability to dial the flame into a simmer. It's a problem for those who want to bake, but it's one you can overcome by being watchful. The other environment in which these stoves might have difficulty is a place like the coast, where wind might whip sand into the burner; however, I've often used them sea-kayaking without difficulty. This is the lightest, most reliable white-gas stove I've ever used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Baller. Buy one. No, buy two. This stove is great. Light, manageable and fairly clean. The pump works great the heat is evenly distributed and somewhat controllable. Easy to light and easy to use in your tent if necessary. Windscreen works well and doesn't burn tons of gas.
