Great insuranceI bought the prefilter when I purchased my SweetWater. Even in clear water the prefilter catches a lot of silt. I've used this for over a year now and it is very brown on one side and the other side it still white. The main filter in my SweetWater still looks like new. The replacement filter come on a nice case so you can bring extras if you know you are going to be filtering some dirty water. It's a great way to extend the life of your main filter element.

Saves Your FilterI bought this to use with my MSR MiniWorks water filter. The MiniWorks (and other ceramic filters) are prone to clogging easily when the water is even slightly silty. Yes, you can take the ceramic filter out, scrape it down, and keep going, but... It is much easier to just swap out one of the small compressed paper filters in this pre-filter (replacements are easily found, are cheap, come in a 3 pack tube and are light weight). Also, every time you scrape down a ceramic filter, you scrape away some of the filter material - if you do this a lot, you will need to replace the filter more often - they are expensive (about $40), so this is a better option. Oh, the "pre-filter" that comes on the MiniWorks? They pretty much only filter out sticks, rocks, etc. This pre-filter will catch the very small silty particles that tend to clog the ceramic filter. I just ordered an MSR Hyperflow and hope/assume it will work with it as well as I plan to continue to use this wonderful time-saver.

Worth having in muddy waterworks great when dealing with muddy water after heavy rains, save the filters, and a little bulky but it does its job.
