"Adequate, but Better Choices Out There" 11/17/11
This is a good filter, when it worked. It makes good tasting water, and is easy to clean in the field. My main complaint was that it almost always failed me in the field. It would filter the first liter or two well, but after that it either pumped slow, required great force, or quite pumping all together. I have since replaced it with another brand filter, and have had no such problems with the new one. I always found a way to make it work, but it was so difficult at times that I would not recomend this filter to others.
"It takes the nasties out of my water" 08/13/11
This purifier does not make sweetwater (neither sweet tasting water, nor Sweetwater beer), that is a misnomer. However, it is sweet at purifying water. This things flow is super fast and it's extremely easy to use. One quick warning: the rubber stopper inside the cannister sometimes will create a seal, which means no water will come out. It's an easy fix and you'll be back to purifying your water in no time.
"Good but not great" 08/04/11
This pump does exactly what it says it will do and it does a pretty darn good job at it. Make sure you do a preliminary pumping to rid all the black carbon out. The only reason i am not giving this product a "Love It" status is because of the craftsmanship of the product. It seems to be a lower grade quality plastic handle that could potentially cause problems in the future but I am hoping that it will last as long as any of my other MSR items have lasted. Happy trails!
"Easy to use, clean safe water!" 06/20/11
Easy to use and packs fairly small. Worth the weight and space in the pack to not have to carry water in on a canoe trip or hike where water is accessible. Make sure to follow the instructions with the liquid treatment component, letting the water settle in a bucket of some sort while the chemical does its thing will also increase the life of the filter. Do not connect the clean water hose the first time you pump to clear out the black carbon that comes out of a new filter cartridge. Pairs very well with the Dromedary Bags by MSR to store your purified water. Would buy again if I had to but hope that it lasts for years!
"No wiggle worms!" 03/18/11
I used a friends and I just had to have one. The first backpacking trip I went on, I took about 8 liters of water with me, I was scared to death I would run out and there was no way I was gonna drink out of some stream I knew nothing about. I decided to try it and I've been a believer ever since. I am now able to shave about 10 lbs. off my pack weight. Water is heavy and if you don't have to carry it up a mountain, you shouldn't.
"works well and you dont die!" 12/21/10
Got this after looking for a new filter for a long time. I had some bad experiences with an MSR filter in the past and was shying away from it but after buying it i could not be more than satisfied! great flow rate, water has no weird taste and its easy to clean and use! i also like that the water intake is on the top of the drop. worked great in the boundry waters and in oklahomas nasty rivers and no sickness at all, if it works in the red dirt world it will work anywhere.
"Great system at a nice price. Very Versatile." 09/21/10
While there are smaller systems out there, this one is small and light enough for me. Extremely versatile and can make nasty water look and taste great..... No digestive nightmares yet. It comes with an adapter to screw onto a wide mouth bottle (Nalgene, etc.) and I purchased an add on to plug it right into my Camelbak bladder so I can leave the bladder right in my pack! I have no complaints about this system..... the flow is very efficient. Look no further.
"I didn't get the runs" 09/03/10
I've used this filter on a few backpacks now and so far so good. I have yet to get sick from any water that this filter has produced. It also tastes better than anything that will ever come out of your tap (it is filtered mountain stream water after all).My only gripe is that it does start to get slow after 3-5 gallons of murky water, and the release valve kept shooting me in the face. Not cool. A quick scrub with the included brush took care of that problem.
"VERY NICE well worth the money spent!" 03/20/10
The good and the bad. The bad first. It is a little on the heavy side compared to just using a dirty sock and bleach. The reason this particular unit is a little more expensive than the other MSR is its listed for developing countries and includes a bottle of the Sweetwater Purifier Solution. I am mentioning this because I stared at the differant filters for hours trying to decide and wondering WHY this particular one combatted viruses too. I wish this had been explained in the add copy. The GOOD! Its nice and durable, it filtere REALLY WELL, and the biggest thing? It includes an adapter that screws right onto my Camelbak water bottle!!!
"Mmmm, clean tasty water" 01/14/10
It may be a bit pricy but I thought it best to not skimp on something like... water. I searched all over looking at different purification systems that would kill as much nasty crap as possible without including myself in it's rampage. It is easy to pump and easy to clean.
"for amatuer hikers" 12/17/09
if you are just beginning in your backpacking career, you might get one of these just as I did several years ago...they have to be cleaned on a regular basis, replace the filters quite often, and are heavy to carry...but it spits out water quite quickly...now, i have saved the 1.5 pounds and just use bleach...2 drops per quart epa tested and approved...look it up...so for backpacking, too much weight...for a leisure, much less serious backpacking trip, its great...
"This made filtering water not only easy, it's small size makes it great for backpacking!" 09/22/09
I used this about a month ago, and I loved it. The water was clean, clear, and tasted great! It was also very easy to use and packs very small taking little to no space in my pack. Great job MSR and Moosejaw for such a cheap and great product.
