Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely fantastic! I have had my eye on this product for quite awhile. After doing extensive research into various filter methods and brands, I chose the SweetWater filter. I'm happy I did. During a 3 day backpacking trip deep into Rocky Mountain National Park, this filter performed flawlessly for the needs of me and my fiance. The rest of our group struggled with their own methods of filtering, due to low ability to filter water at a reasonable volume, and concerns of contamination. By using the SweetWater, we were able to filter more than enough water for cooking and hydration, and the ease of use and assembly were flawless. I highly recommend this product. Well done MSR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Customer service Customer service is where MSR/Cascade Designs shines. After 5-6 years of frequent use, noticed hairline cracks in central piston, as well as flow through pressure relief circuit even with new filter element. Reasonably fast response to email, and pump unit replaced after I sent it in. I am only out postage one way. This is what keeps me coming back to MSR. Unit itself works well. Good flows, and filter function appears to work well. As with any filter, bacterial/protozoa filters; virus needs chemical treatment (at lower dose than without filtering). This is simply physics and biology. Storage recs are to keep in freezer to avoid bacterial overgrowth, but I've dried unit not done this without obvious problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavily tested: India, Nepal, AK, CA, OR, etc I've had this filter model for 10 years, and use it without adding chemicals including in cities and villages of India and Nepal. I have used it in the winter when it freezes at night and still works, in silty glacier water when desperate (will do .5L, then needs a brushing), and some nasty looking places at times. Couple notes: I have never seen the "grid" pattern show up that means the filter needs to be replaced... though I think ive done over 700 liters on some cartridges. With the filter material, it is hard to tell if it does have a crack in it... if it is dark and you are in a stupid state it is possible to bend the lever the wrong way and pop the assembly apart, but a little string/wire/tape will fix it. Pump unit has started leaking now, but ive been using this pump with new cartridges for probably 5 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best filter on the market I bought this filter in 1996 and have used it multiple times every year. I still have had no problem with it. Just got to wash out the filter after each trip.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sweet water filter skims the water nicely This filter pumps water smoothly, feels sturdy, works on a one-stroke action so it is slower than dual strokes...the floating hands-free intake design and simple construction along with the great tasting water make it a favorite for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks nice but I hope mine was a "dud" I bought this on Amazon before my kids' first backpacking trip. It looked like a quality piece and I've trusted MSR for 20 years. We brushed the filter out at home and ran a test run with tap water to clear the charcoal. Our first night, we pumped out of a fairly swift creek; it pumped 2 liters of water before going into bypass. This water was high altitude snowmelt, not visibly silty...every pump was shooting our drinking water out of the pressure relief valve. Brushing the filter out did nothing to remedy the issue.Thankfully, I thought twice when packing unproven gear, our 15 year old PUR came to the rescue. I know there are duds in any mass produced product, I will be returning it to Amazon in exchange for another...please don't burn me twice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic I've used this water pump for over 15 years and it hasn't stopped yet. Never had a problem with it. Especially if you use the pre-filter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not too happy with msr. Purchased an msr sweetwater micro filter. After opening and trying it at home at my sink it immediatley was pushing water out of the overflow due to a clogged filter. So I sent the filter back to msr and I was told that I would have to pay for a new filter cartridge even tho it was clogged right out of the box new. So what was I to do I had already paid for the filter and it would be worthless to me that way so I was forced to purchase a replacement cartridge. Needless to say I won't be buying anymore msr products.
