The Sweetwater Microfilter by MSR. Treading the middle ground between MSR's lightest and most durable filters, the SweetWater Microfilter makes water treatment easy. Simple, lightweight and versatile, it's the perfect water treatment option for light to moderate use, with the capacity to easily step-up to the demands of the occasional big trip. It pumps easily with a 4:1 mechanical advantage, producing 1.25L per minute and can easily be cleaned in the field without tools to restore flow rates.

I took this on three multi day floats and it let me down twice. I regularly clean the filter and the rivers were clear and spring fed so it was not clogged. It did not take hardly any pressure for it to break and left me scratching my head both times. It was ~20degrees but if that was the culprit, MSR should know better than to put out a "fair weather" piece of kit. I would not stray away from the brand but I wouldn't take this (or whats left of it) on another trip if someone gave it to me.

"Good pump Must have." 02/02/13

this pump works great! It pumps relatively fast and is easy to clean. However you do need to clean it after every use so that it can continue to work perfectly. Very happy with this product.

"It makes water safe to drink" 01/08/13

Overall, this is a trusty device. I have used it on 3 different backpacking/canoeing expeditions and it worked on each one. The system never broke, unlike one of the Katadyn water filters. It is compact and the water does not have a bad taste to it. My friend does a pretty poor job of maintaining his sweetwater so it takes like 3-4 min to filter a liter, but I would guess it would be better if you actually maintained it.

"It makes water safe to drink" 01/08/13

I've used this product on three different backpacking/canoeing expeditions. In the end, it makes water safe to drink. The water does not taste bad after it has been filtered. I've never gotten sick using this water filter. My friend has one of these and did a poor job of maintaining it so it got to the point where it took like 3-4 minutes to filter a liter.

"hey this thing is great" 09/17/12

I liked i i wasn't stuck buying some wide mouth bottle to use with it. the thing is ligher weight than that version too. nice long hose don't want to get your bottle near the water, plus would be a good tourniquet or playfully beating someone. comes with a small stuff sack. the dirty water end has a small pre filter. the instructions filled w tips on how to store and use it. comes w a cleaning brush. you can trim the tubes if u want to reduce weight. keep the clean hose in a separate plastic bag so the water doesn't become cross contaminated. the inky thing i would change a the pump handle. Im afraid of breaking it pumping to hard.

"Great tasting water, but..." 09/10/12

The name of this filtration system is spot on, I love the taste (or should say, lack of taste) of the water that has been through this pump. I also really like the size/weight, how quickly the pump works, and also the comfortable ergonomics of operation. The only problem I've had is durability. I have owned three of these systems, one broke completely after only a few uses, the second one is not fairing well but is still the usable. The last one works great, and I hope I am able to get it to last longer, but I'm hoping MSR will come up with a more durable concept.

"It works, but can become a bit of a hassle." 12/31/11

Here's the deal...If you want a water filter that actually takes out most of the silt and dirt in your trail water plus actually makes it taste all right...than this is the filter for you. However, be prepared to continually clean it out after nearly every liter you pump because this filter clogs quite easily. It may be a good idea to invest in the "silt stopper" accessory. Raise your glass, and happy filtration fellaz!

"get ready to pump" 09/23/11

Great product results, but water always spews from the handle...making you pump twice as much. I'd clean the filters routinely to no avail. I bought a new cartridge for it...and it was the same results. This thing only pumped properly for 4 days, it really just acts like there is a leaky O-ring somewhere in the pump. You can still use the pump, but be ready for wet and cold hands and losing 30-40% of each pump to squirting out the side (NOT the emergency relief valve)

"works, but had a lot of problems" 06/23/11

used this on a 5 day backpacking trip. it was great to fill up a few bottles, but after pumping about 5 liters, it started spewing water from the base of the handle after every single pump. as a result, it took twice as long to fill up any water bottle and water spraying everywhere left our hands freezing cold in the autumn morning. we probably did something wrong...or it was probably an easy fix...we just didn't know how to fix it. but it was a bad enough experience that i'd look elsewhere for a water filter.

"Light and does its job" 06/17/11

I have used a few filters and this one holds up to the rest. I like the size and the ease of use. The pump action is also a plus (however my friend's mechanism broke because it is only plastic). There is also a pressure valve that indicates when the filter is clogged and is not doing its job, however sometimes the pressure valve releases with a new filter. Overall this filter is just as good as the rest and I use it for my trips in the minnesota boundary waters canoe area.

"Nice light filter for a couple" 05/23/11

After getting a Miox (works great, but is not a filter), we decided to add the Sweetwater Microfilter to get rid of the sediment issues with using the Miox alone. MSR make great products and the Miox and Sweetwater Microfilter were just what we were looking for in our camping and emergency preparedness kits. Clogging in cruddy water is a slight issue with the Sweetwater that we minimized by using a handkerchief to get the really nasty stuff out before we ran it though the filter. So far, so good. We really like the light weight.

"the best" 02/17/11

Love this filter. does what its supposed to do. not too bulky or heavy. some people complain that it clogs too easily-those people are probably using it in really bad water sources. as long as you draw from decent sources then this filter will last a while. and get the silt stopper if you need to
