"The MSR Reactor is simply an awesome stove. If you are someone who eats oatmeal and freeze-dried backpacker meals, there is no better stove for you. This is a lightweight and super efficient stove, and it boils water unbelievably fast. That said, it is tough to use for simmering or gentle heating; there is really no "low" setting. The included pot is perfect for two, but for larger groups the 2.5L pot is necessary. I have owned my Reactor stove for a couple years, use it on every single trip, and have never had single problem with it. If you stick to simple cooking on the trail this is without a doubt the best stove for you."

"Excellent Backcountry Boiler" 02/05/12
Here's the deal. If you're into serious backcountry and you want a fast boil, then this is the stove for you. If you like to take your time, do the outdoor gourmet thing and don't have the extra time to cook, you might look for something else. Plus, it nerds out and glows "MSR" when you fire it up.
"Its great if its what youre just boiling water." 08/17/11
OK, so this stove is IMO the best canister stove you'll find. But it certainly has its downfalls. This stove has NO temp control whatsoever. It does not have the ability to do anything outside of boil water/melt snow very quickly. It does not work well (nor does any other canister stove) in alpine environments. The canisters freeze and dont work. The only way to remedy this is to keep the canister in your bag at night. If youre doing all the dehydrated meals in relatively warm weather, this thing is awesome. Me personally, I stick with the classic white gas stoves like the MSR Whisperlite.
"Better than a jetboil but..." 06/12/11
I used t own a jetboil system and switched over to this guy. The MSR is a better stove (more efficient, longer burn times) but it's a tad heavy and takes up too much room in my pack. If you're going to use a butane stove and spend serious time in the mountains, switch over to something like a pocket rocket or snow peak.

"No Competition In The Fast Boil or Fuel Savings Category - Get It!" 05/15/11
This stove system is close to perfect. Not only does it boil water FAST, but the raspberry red flame is virtually windproof which accounts for significant fuel savings vs. other canister stoves (including the Jetboil which isn't half the stove the Reactor is). What else could you ask for? Piezo ignition would be nice - otherwise it's perfect. Want to simmer? Bring along a MSR Pocket Rocket. The Reactor pot has grooves on the bottom that line up with the Pocket Rocket. That said, you're probably not looking at this system if you wanted a simmering champ. Don't be put off by the weight, it's surprisingly light and compact (this coming from a gram counter). Get it!
"Super fast heater but limited options" 03/07/11
I've had this for 2 years and it can definitely boil water very fast (2min or less). However, it seems to be limited to the one container/pot because the grill of the unit is not flat and requires the specially designed pot to fit on top of it. If you can made do with the one pot, you can enjoy the other benefits of being one of the quickest heating units that is very well built and compact in size. I really enjoy it.
"Satisfied" 02/27/11
Made for the backpacker. Packs down nice. Sets up in under a minute. Lights up easy even in a light breeze. Be careful though, once lit this puppy gets hot. In a light breeze the stove is red hot in a matter of seconds. Once you set the upper part onto the burner its only a couple minutes till the water is boiling. Just enough time to open up a packet of food or set up for a cup of coffee. Everything fits back into the container and does not take up much space. Wish they had marked the inside with 8oz markers.
"Heats quickly packs down nicely." 12/22/10
This heats things quickly and the heat defuser helps control and evenly heat. It packs down nicely and the works well in wind. Be careful when shutting the lid though it tends to snap down quickly and stings when it hits your hand. Other than that complaint I would defiantly recommend it.
"Rocket Fuel" 11/06/10
I have used this stove on several backpacking trips & have never once been disappointed in it's performance and/or durability. I was a bit concerned with the fuel usage, but it hasn't been an issue at all. All pieces pack down inside the pot (fuel canister included), which makes stuffing in your backpack nice. Boiling time is unmatched even in colder temps. Be careful while lighting do to rising fuel vapors, can be lethal!
"Best stove above the tree line." 10/23/10
If you need to melt snow or boil water in windy conditions then this is the stove for you. If you want to simmer then look elsewhere. One 8 oz can of fuel lasted our 6 person party for 3 nights on a trip up Glacier Peak including one day of melting snow for water so the stove is really efficient. I have used it in temps down to the 20's with a fuel can that was low on fuel. Boil time was slightly reduced but much better than anything else that I have used.
"Great at what it's supposed to do" 03/23/10
This thing boils water and melts snow in a hurry. It's amazing how fast it works. On the down side, it doesn't simmer well. So I gave it 4 stars only because for me it seems to have limited functionality. It's a lot of money to spend for a water boiler.I've tried to warm soup, or simmer a serving of delicious quinoa, but it's very difficult to avoid burning what's on the bottom. It's just too gosh darn hot!
"For the ultimate in snow melting technology" 01/29/10
"MSR Atomic Blast Furnace" would be a better suited name for this contrapment. I have used it in every imaginable weather condition and it NEVER fails me, which is essentially the one thing a snow melting machine can't do.Extremely fast boiling times and snow melting power, rock solid, lightweight and cooler than all of James Bond's gadgets combined. This is the stove MacGyver has wet dreams about. You won't be winning "Top Chef" with this one but it's the best in it's class, who the hell eats quiche anyway.
