The MSR Reactor 1.7L Stove System is one of the fastest and most fuel efficient stoves currently on the market (able to boil .5 liters of water in 1.5 minutes). It is a solid choice for the ultralight thru-hiker all the way to the casual camper. The 1.7 liter pot is ample volume for 2+ people. On blustery winter hikes you can melt enough snow for your whole crew. Then use it to prepare your signature meal (mine is Ramen noodles with the accidental addition of dirt and maybe some twigs). The heat exchanger completely encloses the radiant burner head and virtually takes the wind out of the equation. This means faster boil times and efficient fuel usage. The stove and fuel both pack into the pot for ultimate convenience.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Stove I've owned many backpacking stoves and this is the best one so far, but it's not perfect (yet). I frequently camp in high exposed places and the radiant burner is amazing once you get it going. The one problem is that it's sometimes hard to get it going in the conditions it otherwise excels in (cold and windy). Occasionally the flame sits on top of the burner and won't turn red, which is frustrating and wastes fuel. But mostly the stove is awesome, and the build quality is excellent. (I tried a Jetboil years ago and returned it because the build quality was poor).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast boiled water I got the 2.8L last summer for a trip for 4 in the Apostle Islands. We also took a Snow Peak Titanium to speed up meal time. This boiled 2L twice faster than the other did 1L, with mild wind. The only problem is the weak plastic lid cracked on the maiden hike, although remailed functional. I contacted MSR upon return and a new lid was at my door in 2 days. Review lost half a star on the lid but gained it back with customer service.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not for cold weather I bought this stove in the USA on my recent travel there. Just used it camping here in Australia in the snow at a very mild temperature of minus 2 degree celsius (28 fahrenheit). It certainly did not blast along, it took quite a while to get the water boiling, the gas bottle had frost on the outside but it did resist the heavy wind. In the past , I have used the MSR XGK and never had problems in the cold. So from now on, I will continue using the XGK in the cold as the Reactor is not reliable in the cold. I will take the Reactor on my other trips as it is clean, efficient and wind resistant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best canister mounted stove PERIOD. Sorry, you cannot compare this to a MicroRocket. At all. Especially if the criteria is based on weight and boil time (without wind factored in). I've used this Reactor enough to never want to go back to a MicroRocket, PocketRocket, Superfly, etc. regardless of weight savings. This stove is too fast and efficient for other comparisons.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Boils fast, but.... Stove over heated on a kayak trip. This internal switch is a problem because it can not be repaired in the field. MSR replaced it but I need a stove that is reliable! Also at least two of the dedicated pots should be nestable! The overall wind proof design is elegant, pots simply rest on top of the burner, (no twisting required).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for backpacking Took it backpacking in New Mexico. We had a group of 12 and we were able to prepare all of our cooking needs for the 10 day trip. The stove was very efficient on the fuel usage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Stove Just finished a 27, 450 km backpack from Banff to Jasper on the Great Divide Trail. I have owned this stove for a few years but it was on this trip that it's features really shone. Three of us hiked this trail using a single 2.5 litre pot. Compared to a number of the other section and through hikers, we ate well and always had hot water for a cup of tea. While not the lightest stove/pot combination - its ability to quickly and efficiently boil water or cook food meant we had to carry less fuel. It also meant that our food and hot water was ready quicker. The stove itself is compact and light, easy to store and requires no maintenance. It is also very easy to light with a spark ignitor. The pots because of the integrated heat exchanger, are a bit heavier. The pots are easy to clean. Although the stove does not simmer well. For our backpacking meals turning it on and then off letting the food sit and cook worked well further conserving fuel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our go-to stove. I bought this when the 1L size pot was brand new. I expected to use it for winter emergencies (melting water, food, hot drinks) as it was small enough to take in my day pack. It has ended up "our stove" for year round backpacking adventures. Each pot makes enough water for two hot drinks or two of our home-made freeze dried meals. It is fuel efficient (we carried it for an 8 day wonderland trail trip party of 2- 3 meals each per day plus a drink with each meal and didn't run out of fuel using a 16oz can) and melts snow just fine in the winter. It would not work well for any simmering. If all you need is hot or boiling water and you plan to make food in another container this stove is perfect.
