The MSR Reactor 1.7L Stove System is one of the fastest and most fuel efficient stoves currently on the market (able to boil .5 liters of water in 1.5 minutes). It is a solid choice for the ultralight thru-hiker all the way to the casual camper. The 1.7 liter pot is ample volume for 2+ people. On blustery winter hikes you can melt enough snow for your whole crew. Then use it to prepare your signature meal (mine is Ramen noodles with the accidental addition of dirt and maybe some twigs). The heat exchanger completely encloses the radiant burner head and virtually takes the wind out of the equation. This means faster boil times and efficient fuel usage. The stove and fuel both pack into the pot for ultimate convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rapid Hot water I have had this stove since late 2012. It was my primary "water boiler" on an extended backpacking trip in Tasmania and on other overnights and day hikes since that time. Durability; compact design; ease of use and boiling efficiency are key attributes. Boiling times were reduced once I stopped "admiring the glowing reactor surface" - light the stove -pop on the reactor pot - get your food packets ready - and add the hot water. While my liquid fuel stoves still have a role this is my go to for all water boiling through 3 seasons and early winter. It does work well in cold weather but I prefer the apparent higher output of the liquid fuel stove in very cold situations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best stove for boiling water I research a ton of stuff before buying. This actually met or exceeded my expectations. Boils water like a champ. Side by side with my old canister stove this thing put the old stove to shame. This boiled ~1 liter water in ~2 min, whereas my old stove took 10+ min. My wife was skeptical, but took it on a wintery trip into the Grand Canyon with 4 other stoves. The other stoves couldn't keep up, and they ended up only using this stove. I've loaned it to friends and they all were blown away and impressed. They were all skeptical of how good it is, until they tried it. Now they all want to borrow it for their trips.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our go-to stove. I bought this when the 1L size pot was brand new. I expected to use it for winter emergencies (melting water, food, hot drinks) as it was small enough to take in my day pack. It has ended up "our stove" for year round backpacking adventures. Each pot makes enough water for two hot drinks or two of our home-made freeze dried meals. It is fuel efficient (we carried it for an 8 day wonderland trail trip party of 2- 3 meals each per day plus a drink with each meal and didn't run out of fuel using a 16oz can) and melts snow just fine in the winter. It would not work well for any simmering. If all you need is hot or boiling water and you plan to make food in another container this stove is perfect.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not for cold weather I bought this stove in the USA on my recent travel there. Just used it camping here in Australia in the snow at a very mild temperature of minus 2 degree celsius (28 fahrenheit). It certainly did not blast along, it took quite a while to get the water boiling, the gas bottle had frost on the outside but it did resist the heavy wind. In the past , I have used the MSR XGK and never had problems in the cold. So from now on, I will continue using the XGK in the cold as the Reactor is not reliable in the cold. I will take the Reactor on my other trips as it is clean, efficient and wind resistant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing stove Have had this stove for a few years now and it has never let me down. I have used it in snow, wind, rain and around 1600m and still boils extremely fast as if was testing in a store. This has been used in comparrison to other brands and models and still comes out on top. Packing of stove is nice and neat have considered going for 1L pot to cut down on volume and weight but don't think is worth it in the long run for longer boil times and not a huge weight saving. The only downside to this stove is if using a fire steel to light it. It needs to be done quickly as does have a slight mushroom flame that singes knuckle hairs. Apart from that I can't praise this stove enough I take it on every trip.

I want to have this stove since it came out on market 4-5 yrs ago. since it is new to me I waited till all the bugs removed.,,I also have dragon fly, phoebus( old but works fine, no pump type ) and two other butane gas stoves, but no comparison with this baby, it looks so handsome as well as works GR888888, love it.,,Anyone who want buy stove, I strongly recommend buy this one, you will fall in love with this one just like me. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Stove I've owned many backpacking stoves and this is the best one so far, but it's not perfect (yet). I frequently camp in high exposed places and the radiant burner is amazing once you get it going. The one problem is that it's sometimes hard to get it going in the conditions it otherwise excels in (cold and windy). Occasionally the flame sits on top of the burner and won't turn red, which is frustrating and wastes fuel. But mostly the stove is awesome, and the build quality is excellent. (I tried a Jetboil years ago and returned it because the build quality was poor).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and effective, tough and reliable. I have owned many stoves. When you are at hi altitude, tired and cold. This cooker is quick and clean. Put a boil in the bag meal on and within 3 minutes you have a hot meal and the water you use for a hot drink. The stove will burn evenly until the canister is completely empty and there is no washing up. This is a rugged and tough stove and comes into its own on sparse alpine trips. Size is the thing here, I have used smaller space saving and lighter stoves, but as always there is a trade off and I think the relative bulk of this stove is well worth the space it takes up even in a small pack. I have used the stove up to around 8,000 metres and the air pressure does have an effect but the stove still performs and does what it is supposed to do.
