"I have had the MSR Miniworks EX Microfilter for almost 10 years now and it has never failed me. Sure, there are faster filters now, but this guy will simply not let you down because it's really easy to use and field maintain. Just screw your large mouth bottle on the bottom of the filter, throw your hose in the water, and then pump away. The ceramic cartridge is super durable, as well as the housing. I have dropped it a lot and never had anything break on it. The carbon core filter actually flavor corrects the water too, so you don't have strong mineral tastes, and you can even pair the MSR Miniworks EX up with any tab you would use to kill viruses. Use the tab, then filter that water through this and it will be virus, bacteria, and grit free, but still taste fresh. A great piece of reliable gear."

"uhh, great!" 05/19/12
The bottom screws right into my nalgene so I don't have to worry about trying to keep the bottle between my legs, keeping the pump above the bottle's top, and then pumping -- recipe for a wet lap! Easily fills a few nalgenes in as many minutes, but you will get a little bit of a forearm workout. I love the depth controller foam thing on the tube and it easily makes sure that you don't pull silt off the bottom. The whole thing comes apart very quickly and makes for easy cleaning and drying after your trip is over. Remember to check your filter before and after with the tool!
"Bombproof" 04/22/12
Great filtration system! Slide the foam to adjust the height of the inlet based on your water source (don't drag on the bottom but keep it below the surface - and a few inches below the water's surface in stagnant water), screw on your nalgene and pump away. Of note, filling a camelbak bladder can be a pain when it's already packed away... UNLESS you've got the miniworks then you can pop off your camelbak mouthpiece, plug the tube onto the spout in the cleanside on the miniworks and pump away! Great taste and bombproof engineering.

I have used this filter for over 5 year now. I own and have used other filters but I always seem to prefer having this work horse by my side. I always read about people having problems with it. I've never had a problem with mine, NEVER. It might not be 1L/1 min but it's pretty close. As long as you use a little intelligence you shouldn't have problem. All you need to do is use a slow, consistent pump... Some people try pumping it as fast as they can, that's wrong. Watch the water in the top chamber, simple. And, when it starts get hard to pump, break it down a give the filter a quick cleaning and you are good to go again.
"Decent product" 03/09/12
I've had my Miniworks since 2004. Nothing wrong with it, but I prefer the Katadyn Hiker. Basically the same product, but the Hiker just packs up nicer. The handle lies up against the chamber, without sticking out like the Miniworks. Also, I don't know if it's available for the Miniworks, but the Hiker comes with an attachment for hydration bladder hoses. It's always such a pain to dig my bladder out of my pack to refill it. With the Hiker, I can plug the Clean output hose directly to my drink tube. Pump and fill my bladder while it's still in my pack.
"Heavy and Slow" 03/04/12
For whatever reason, this filter has never worked right for me... I use it in crystal clear water on backpacking trips (just to be extra safe) and somehow, it still finds a way to clog up. Don't get me wrong, through all the clogging, it has worked very well. It takes anywhere from 10-15 min to fill a Nalgene; its meant to fill Nalgenes, as they screw right in. At about a pound, its not too heavy, but there are definitely lighter filters with easier operation than this filter. But, if you want a rock solid work horse filter that will never let you down (no matter how slowly it pumps) than this is the filter for you.
"Great solid dependable filter!" 03/01/12
Sure there are newer filters, lighter filters, faster filters, but the best thing about the miniworks is it's stood the test of time, it's reliable, field serviceable and when it comes to purifying your water that's a piece of gear that just needs to work without problems. As with all filters the more pre-filtering of the water you can do (especially if it's dirty) the longer the filter will last and the easier it will pump. The extra time and effort needed to do some pre-filtering is well worth it over the long haul.
"Good, dependable, trustworthy water treatment, but can be slow" 02/08/12
This filter does what it is supposed to do, and keeps you healthy in the backcountry. I've used mine on several trips and the ceramic filter holds up well over time and gets the water clean. The downside of this filter is that you have to pump it constantly while using it, and it can get slow over time. You are required to open it up and clean it often (especially if water is murky) to keep the flow rate reasonable. It advertises 1L/min flow rate I think, but a more realistic estimate is 1L/2-3min. The best feature is that it attaches directly to wide-mouth (nalgene style) bottles.
"Still works after more than 10 years" 01/28/12
My dad got one for our first backpacking trip together when I turned seven. I am still using it more than 13 years later and it works as well as the day we got it. There is not much more to say. It lasts, cleans your water, is light, and you will never need to buy another filter.
"Its great" 11/24/11
i have gone on a lot of trips with friends who have the msr water filter and have used it before its easy and small for backpacking. cleaning is also very easy the only down fall is that it takes for ever to dry and when you think its dry and close it all up then open it up the next time you realize it was never dry the first time.
