"I prefer to drink nasty filthy water. For those who do not, I recommend picking up a Hyperflow Filter from MSR. Even though it is very small and lightweight, it can filter 3 liters an hour, which is about 3 times more efficient than most water filters. The Hyperflow also comes with a pre-filter for those who like their water free of sand. Personally I find that nice crunch to be quite satisfying, but to each their own. To clean this bad boy out all you need to do is flip some valves around and back flow the filter. Like I said, I'm not that into clean water, but for those that don't like intestinal parasites, the MSR Hyperflow is the filter for you."

"When it works it actually filters 3 l/min :)" 10/29/11
After using it in anything but the clearest of water it slows down. Not down to nothing, but closer to 1 l/min. It takes more force, but it's not all that bad. Backflushing do restore some of the speed, but at the end of my six weeks hiking this summer it didn't do much. Flushed it anyway... Serious backflushing at home restored it a bit more. But this only helped for a few days.It is a bit of a chore to backflush every 6-8 l, and if you trap air in the cartridge it goes from a chore to a pain in the a**. Read instructions carefully!I love the size and weight. Have ordered two more filter cartridges, and looking forward to next summer.

This thing can really flow. My group brought a couple other filters on a 4 day backpack in Southern Utah cause I wasn't sure how things would go — the other filters became a waste of space after this little guy went head to head.Between all the various hook-up options (nalgene head attachment, blatter hose nozzle) and the efficiency it was just way less trouble to use the Hyperflow for all our water filtering for 5 people.Learning how to back flush properly and performing it while you're out there is necessary, but there are loads of youtube videos and instructions, and once you've got it down its not a big deal. Worth the trade-off for weight and speed.
"Fills bottles fast for such a small & light package. Best fast/light backpack filter I've used." 09/28/11
Love this filter, it packs up super small and is so light it's barely noticeable! It pumps water quickly and easily especially using the Nalgene attachment. MSR recommends backflushing the filter in the field after every so many liters filtered in order to maintain max flow rates. I found the process to be pretty simple/painless, but I'd recommend that everyone try it at home to make sure you understand it.The only minus is that it can sometimes be hard to properly submerge the floating filter, especially in quicker-moving waters. A little MacGyver action (think rock strapped to the float) or help from a friend is all it takes to work around. I've never found it to be a huge deal.
"Best filiter I've ever had." 09/23/11
I bought this product at a local store and have loved it ever since. I've taken it on more than 30 trips and it has never let me down. It is super easy to use and the fact that it screws onto a nalgene bottle makes it incredibily easy to not spill. I have used it in some pretty muck-nasty water and it filters really well. It is also super easy to clean, just flip the inner core piece around and back flow water through it at home and bam, you got a super clean filter again. It also packs up into a super small bag that is easy to loose inside your pack. Great product for backpacking MSR is always the way to go.
"Best Filter on the Market" 05/15/11
I recently purchased this filter and used it on an overnight trip in the Smoky Mountains. The ease that it filtered combined with the speed made it a huge hit for our group. The filter easily attaches to water bottles and hydration bags and fills them with minimal effort. The size and weight completes the package for an overall great filter. We are planning a boundary waters trip next month, and I will actually be purchasing a second filter for the trip.
"EXCELLENT!!! SIMPLE!!!" 05/09/11
Planning our first backpacking trip to Isle Royale left us worried about water filtration. After much debate, we decided on a "pump" water filter. This was very easy to use! The water tasted great and we didn't have any intestinal issues (whew)! It comes with great storage packaging, easy to fit it all into the zippered bag, and nice a light!!! We still took sterilization tablets but didn't need them. When we got home we cleaned it out and let it dry before storing it. All of this was a simple process. Couldn't be happier!
"Very quality product" 05/04/11
My girlfriend owns this water filter and it is awesome. I've seen people use the gravity filters and other types of filters, but none compare to this. The gravity filters seem a lot bigger and bulkier, and don't do as good a job. For one, gravity filters don't filter out color or taste. This seems to filter out both. I have never had a problem with bad tasting water using this puppy. It's quick and easy, and can take water from anywhere no matter how dirty or stagnant. Highly recommend this product!
"120L and no problems. Lightweight, small, good product!" 02/08/11
Though I have not had the problems like others (the slowing down and clogging), I have been meticulous about what I put through this thing (using a collapsible bucket then filtering from there). I have also followed the directions, not freezing, back washing it regularly. I am thrilled about the Nalgene screw on top, its a huge help! It compacts down very easily and comes with a nice mesh bag that helps to dry it after use. I keep extra parts on hand as well, because you never know!
"Borrowed it, loved it, so I bought it!" 12/27/10
I borrowed this filter from a friend last summer for a backpacking trip to Isle Royale National Park in Michigan. It was so easy and efficient to use I just bought one for my next trip. Water filtered had no bad taste. This is light-weight and easy to pack. Highly recommend.
"Good for short trips" 09/28/10
A friend and I both have one of these. I use it for weekend trips - it works fine, and I backflush when I get home. He uses his for weeklong trips, backflushes in the field, and on his most recent 5-day trip it totally clogged (he said he's only put about 200 liters through it), despite backflushing frequently. We both note that the intake will not stay face-down unless you put a rock on it. My own tips for use: 1) always carry a spare filter element, 2) collect water in a small nylon bowl, and filter from that, 3) always carry some tablets as backup, in case both filter elements clog, and 4) for trips longer than a weekend, use the MSR Miniworks.
