Rated 1 out of 5 by from Died after 15 liters! Not ready for field use. I purchased the MSR Guardian after speaking with MSR on 3 different occasions as well as several local shops. All assured me the Guardian was the perfect filter to take to the Grand Canyon to filter silty water. After filtering 15 liters of moderately silty water the filter died, all the water was being returned via the outlet hose. Following the directions, I cleaned the pressure relief valve but found it to be perfectly clean. The next step in the instructions is to replace the filter, unfortunately not an option deep in a remote section of the Grand Canyon. The filter appeared to be perfectly clean. When I called MSR, they admitted the Guardian has problems with silty water and was told “we’ve had problems with this pump”. Of course this is unacceptable since they advertise this pump as being made for “worse case sediment”. This ruined a 7 day backpack and forced us to hike out and drive 50 miles to purchase some treatment tables. I should have had a backup but everyone I talked to about this pump assured me of its reliability. I expected much more of this product and from MSR Customer service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have for safe and reliable water. This is the best water purifier on the market, hands down. This is an amazing product, I used this for an extended hike and knowing I had the ability to quickly acquire water from nearly any mud-puddle or stream without the use of nasty tasting tablets or having to hang around for a gravity feed system. (pun intended) If you are even looking at this as an option you should just accept you need it and buy it already! (and yes the student discount works on this) :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised Bought this in preparation for a hike in desert canyon country. Used it to filter 30+ liters of very dirty water without any problem at all with clogging. Purified water looked good, tasted fine, no sediment. Faint odor remained, however - the original water stank from decaying leaves, etc. My friends gave up on their conventional filters after a few liters and Steripens were useless because of turbidity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best one yet I have a collection of water filters including the older model MSR hyperflow filter and the new 3 ounce Sawyer, but this one can't help but make you smile when used. The Sawyer is a pain to fill the dirty water bag, used a Platypus bag with only slightly better results. The older Hyperflow filter is a pain to backflush and gets hard to pump, replaced the filter but the new one is even harder to pump. This new high-dollar filter leaked water out the handle-side of the pump when new, took it apart and spread the lube around better and it sealed up fine. Used it on a overnight pack and was very very happy with how little effort the pump takes and how fast it fills a bottle. It is a little bigger than the hyperflow but sooo much better. The inlet filter looks overkill and will be hard to use in a small water seep but I am sure it will work out. Overall it is so fast and easy to use it is well worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Potentially the best filter ever made so far. I bought this for my daughter who is now in Nicaragua. With widespread contamination of wild water (lakes, rivers etc) with human feces and even tap water uncertain, I wanted the anti virus feature. I have used Sweetwater, and other brands for bacteria and cysts but the no chemical virus elimination is promising. Since I have not tested this in a clinical lab setting I can't promise you there are no viruses. I will say the thing pumps water like no tomorrow and the design seems sturdy and simple. While most people are using bottled water and even Coke when the local retail doesn't do bottled water, my daughter is free as bird to pump her own. I will say that I have some other brand bottles besides Nalgene and they don't work with the clean side threads on the Guardian. So you must carry at least one Nalgene standard widemouth with you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Multipurpose Investment I could say it's the most advanced, easy to use portable purifier on the market, but that's old news. Yes, it is bulky and heavy for backpacking compared to filtering-only options, but it purifies(!), and freezing will not render it unusable. It is also perfect for international travel, mission trips, and home emergency kits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing purifier, Easy to use, and MSR quality! Purifying some ice cold water in the Weminuche Wilderness! Performs flawlessly! Reminds me of camping as a child pumping water from the pump in the ground! So easy to use it's a breeze. I recommend this product A++

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ace up your sleeve! Carrying this water purifier is definitely like having an ace up your sleeve. It is really awesome knowing that you are going to be able to get water regardless of how funky the water source might be. I was able to borrow this filter from a coworker and I am looking forward to buying my own. Hiking 6 days across Isle Royale National Park I was able to carry less water knowing that I was going to be able to get water from swamps and puddles across the island. I didn't even blink while getting water from sources that ruined other peoples filters. The self cleaning aspect is pretty neato, and boy does the water taste great! Seriously, it is better than the water that comes out of my tap at home. Maybe the only negative I can say about the filter is that the input hose tends to float with the mesh screen floating upwards, which drastically reduces the water flow. Not a big deal though. The flow rate is awesome and it fills your bottles quick! I really can't say enough good things about this filter. Hands down the best on the market. My brother will be leaving for the Peace Corps in Zambia shortly, and I plan on getting him one for his stay.

For the MSR Guardian; are spare parts/components available? Or is a second unit the best "spare"?

Where can the spare filters be bought & about how much do they cost?

Asked by: Hanko
Hey lugnut!! Look on page 2 & you will find the replacement filters! DUH!

I didn't see any information on whether the filter could be changed, or if there were any indicators on when it needed changed. Looks awesome, definitely considering the purchase.

Asked by: Mike
Hey there, Thanks for the question. The filter cartridge on this item can be replaced/changed. You typically will know to change it when the flow rate drops to less than 1L a minute when pumping 70 strokes per minute. The filter will still be purifying water, but as the flow rate drops with use more wear appears on the internal parts. I hope this helps.

Will this convert salt water?

Asked by: Duke
No, this is simply a filter which does not remove chemicals, toxins, or heavy metals. It is effective down to 0.02µm (microns). (Technical info from the MSR website). If you're looking for a portable, hand operated desalinator, check out Katadyn.
