Don't expect the durability and bomb-proofness of MSR groundhog stakes. I used these in the desert sand and one broke with not that much force. I will be babying the remaining ones since they do do the job well once you get them in.
"A very convenient option when anchoring in sand and snow, but durability can be an issue."
I've used these in snow and sand when there's nothing else to anchor to. They work very well in soft and semi-consolidated snow with minimal effort to place and they freeze in solidly. Much faster than burying stuff sack anchors. I've used them in rocky pumice "sand" on cascade volcanoes and they hold well, but I don't know of they have enough profile to anchor in something like fine beach sand. Durability was only an issue in the sand, where accidentally stepping on one bent it back about 90 degrees. And once bent, they are very hard to straighten without tools. I don't think they would take much of a pounding in harder ground or ice and I hesitate even to mash them down with my boot. But for lightweight aluminum, the design is about as strong as you can make it.
