"These boots are NOT waterproof."  09/29/10

I spent a week trekking in the Bernese Oberland and for 3 days the boots were fine. We went through plenty of knee high snow (using GORETEX gaiters). However on the 4th day, again in plenty of snow (and using gaiters), my feet were sopping wet. I had to wring out my socks when I arrived at the hut. The tops of my socks and the boots were fine - so no water had got in through the top. It must have seeped in through the lining somehow...My trek was in the middle of August. I dread to think of the consequences if we'd had to hole up somewhere in the middle of winter, in sub-zero temperatures.
