"A solid pack" 01/08/13
I use the older model of this, the Kelty Coyote 4900. It's a solid pack and has a lot of space to stow stuff. New packs are so fancy with everything while my pack just has a huge compartment. This is useful for the times when you try to go backpacking with a dutch oven and a few chimneys of charcoal. Trust me, I've done it.
"This pack, for the money rivals any high-dollar and high-volume pack out there. Period." 10/01/12
One thing Osprey does wrong that Kelty does not, is the amount of pockets. With 8 pockets plus the main body, it's just enough to get your stuff organized.. The real selling point to me was the comfort. I loaded packs by Osprey and Gregory that cost twice as much and were not nearly as comfortable. I've loaded down this pack with a double trad rack, rope, extra clothes, rain jacket, food, two gallons of water, and a crazed marmot. At four miles in and nearly 2000 feet of elevation gain, this thing stayed as comfy as it could. The mesh pockets are durable, as is the overall exterior.
"Good Pack for the price" 08/19/12
I just got done hiking for 2 weeks with this pack. I liked the amount of space I had with this pack and all the pockets were nice. I liked how the top compartment can detach and become a day pack. What I didn't like about the pack is that the straps seem to slip and I have to keep readjusting them throughout the day. Also the mesh pockets in the front of the pack are starting to get holes in them. For the price I think this was a good purchase.
"Great Value" 04/04/12
Used this pack extensively in Canyonlands and Arches National Park this spring. While it may not have some of the "high-tech" features of much more expensive Osprey or Arcteryx packs, I found the Coyote to be a very solid pack, capable of making heavy loads a breeze even in challenging canyon talus/scree terrain. There are no unnecessary pockets, making this pack easy to organize and get used to. I would definitely recommend this pack to someone looking for quality on a budget!
"A bit heavy, but a great pack" 12/04/11
There are certainly lighter packs out there, but this is one heck of a value for sure. It's about the first pack I've used where I didn't say "they should have done this" or "I can't believe they designed it like that." It's a very well-thought design. Hope it holds up.
"You should not be carrying more than this can fit" 09/19/11
This thing is gigantic. If you need to carry any more than fits in this pack, time to reexamine. I lived out of mine for 2 months hiking around Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. I carried some serious gear on a week long wilderness stay. The many miles and 5000 ft elevation gain were a breeze with this comfy and breathable pack. Now I use it as a suitcase for month long stays in disaster zones. This thing will hold anything and everything you need. If I had one complaint it would be that there is no sleeping bag/shoe compartment at the bottom which is a bit of a pain, but the gate opening allows you to get to most things without unpacking every night. Great price for a great pack.
"Sweet Pack" 07/04/11
This pack has a loaded amount of added bonuses. The front loading zipper is great and I use it a lot. This pack is versatile in the sense that, for an internal frame, it can carry things in ways that makes it comfortable. Lashing a tent or sleeping pad between the top compartment and the compression straps is easy and putting something on the front or on the bottom with the daisy chains is great. It is roomy and comfortable. It doesn't breathe as well as the high end packs, but all of the features it brings adds up for it. And at a great price, too!
"Worth every cent, You won't be disapointed!" 05/31/11
i recently purchaced the kelty coyote 80 pack with hopes of getting a fair first backpacking pack but instead i got the nicest pack ever, numerous usefull pockets that are key on an internal frame, perfectly big 4750 cubic inch main bag (which was able to hold my best friends little brother and their wiener dog in the side pocket, i was only confused on how to turn the top into a lumbar pack but if you figure it out, bonus! the ajustable suspension and straps make this the most comfortable pack I've worn. its slim design keeps it from hanging up on branches and bushes. all and all no big downers on it that i can think of.
"It's fecking sweet, light, durable , comfy, perty. Money well spent" 05/31/11
I got this in hopes of having a okay first pack but it blew my mind how well put together it is, this will probably last me a life time and a half. Totally worth every cent. I was only confused on how to make the top into a lumbar pack but if you figure it out, BONUS!!, it's sleekness helps in thicker brush and keeps it from getting hung up on branches. Also tons of actually useful pockets and compartments which is key on an internal frame. Its 4750 cubic inches and also big enough to put my best friends little bro in with their wiener dog! All and all I love it and will buy another if I some how lose or destroy it. (kelty also has a lifetime warranty!)
