The Men's Newport Sandal by Keen is designed to perform in the adverse conditions, the razor-siped outsole and 3mm lugs provide excellent traction. The Keen Newport is a true hybrid, the waterproof uppers withstand the abuse of saltwater and dirt, while providing supple comfort and stylish looks. I personally enjoy my Newports on excursion out to Stony Creek, especially in the Summer, go for a nice walk around the nature center, it really makes for a great date.
I have worn these sandals the past two summers and they are as comfortable as the day I bought them. The rubber toe has protected my feet countless times. You can also wash the sandals in the washer. I then apply mink oil to preserve the leather every so often. After applying the mink oil, they also look new again. After having these sandals work so well, I will definitely buy the Keen brand again, whenever my current pair needs replaced. Though, I don't think that will be any time soon!
"Great for short hikes and campfire nights."
Don't get this if you want a stereotype Keen sandal for water sports, as the leather sandal (though water resistant) takes quite a long time to dry out. I wore it a few times while kayaking, and it took several hours to completely dry out. Though, it wasn't uncomfortable to walk around when wet, so I guess that's not a big complaint. I like it a lot for short hikes, and it's nice all all kinds of terrain. If you plan on longer hikes then it's best worn with socks. If you plan on a backpacking trip, then I'd suggest wearing a more typical hiking boot, but pack these for those nice nights by the fire.
These traditional keens are what I am going to call a hybrid scandal, because they have a closed toe. In a way, they have the best of both worlds. The thick rubber "toe guard" keeps you from stubbing and breaking your toes while hiking, but the open design of the straps allow for good ventilation and also make these an ideal water shoe. There are only a couple issues worth mentioning: first, because of the semi-closed design, it is hard to remove gravel. if you're walking through small rocks and grit, you may have to take them off to clean them out. Also, they aren't incredibly lightweight. Overall, they are really unique and awesome.
"Bought a new pair to appease my wife but I cannot toss the 4 yo pair."
At first I thought they looked 'dorky' with the big rubber bit around the front but they seemed so comfortable I gave them a try. Great shoe to wear anywhere! I've frequently worn them mtn biking and hiking, literally covered them with mud while carrying my bike over obstacles, washed them in a river, sun dried then worn them out to dinner without evidence of the mess. And no stinkyness! 4 years and they've worn level. Finally bought a new pair.
These things are awesome. I had a pair that I wore nonstop for a year. Then I bought a pair the replace them. I'm still wearing the 1st pair after 3 years. They are kind of falling apart, but nothing a little super glue doesn't fix. As a main pair of shoes nonstop for 3 years these are AMAZING. By nonstop I mean everything from thru hiking to go to the bar to weddings. I've lost hope on even trying to ever love another pair of shoes as much as I love these.
"Look better than the H2's. Not as good in water"
I bought these for trekking the La Ciudad Perdida trek in Colombia. I'm due to leave for this in a couple of weeks but I already feel I may have been better off with the h2's for the water crossings. While the leather looks much better than the nylon webbing of the H2's, the foot bed doesn't dry as quickly as my friends H2's which when continuing hiking can be a bit uncomfortable. They are great for cooler footwear in warm climates and I love the toe protection on rougher trails. These are never going to win style contests, but for a sandal, the leather makes them look much better than some other brands and better than the H2's.
I have worn these just about everywhere when the temperature agreed. In the summer, if I'm not wearing work shoes or hiking boots you can bet that I'm wearing these. Sand and rocks find their way into uncomfortable places in these but outside of hiking in rocky terrain or running at the beach...they're always with me when the weather permits. They're are always in my pack as camp lounge shoes when packing. Irreplacible.
I got these for my husband for Christmas. He loved the look (real leather, made well), but were a half-size too big. We returned them to Moosejaw for the correct size and now we're both happy! The customer service at Moosejaw was incredible, as usual... we continue to be lifelong customers!
