Product Description Item No.   10031903

The Vario combines individual efficiency with the simplest possible handling. The technology it uses consists of three filter levels: a high-performance glass fibre filter, a ceramic pre-filter that can be adjusted individually according to the cloudiness of the water, and active charcoal for eliminating odors. Anyone who needs up to two liters of drinking water per minute can use the glass fiber and active charcoal filter. If the water is extremely cloudy, the ceramic pre-filter can be fitted in a moment in order to extend the service life of the glass fiber filter. The Vario is compatible with most standard outdoor bottles and hydration bladders.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter, fast fill, bomber construction. Some buddies and I just went winter camping in northern Michigan and I took this filter along with me. The first night dropped down to -11 degrees, and the last thing we wanted to do was waste time and fuel melting snow. I excitedly busted out the Vario for the first time and ran down to the river. The Vario performed flawlessly, filled my bottle so quick I didn't even notice water spilling over the bottle, and was easy to operate even with gloves on. I didn't notice the extra weight in my pack at all, and because of its sturdy construction I wasn't worried about it cracking or freezing. I have used the MSR waterworks filter, and this one blows it out of the water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Service from Katadyn Somewhere in between airline travel (baggage goons) and storage the plastic piece on the outside of the pump that holds the tubing for the pre-filter and brings water into the internal filters had become weakened. As I was prepping the unit for an AT adventure, this piece broke completely off the unit. This was the night before leaving and it was not a repair that could be made short of getting a brand new replacement piece. For this trip we used the steripen and sediment filter. ,,,,Katadyn customer service rocked! They knew what I was talking about and immediately sent off a new replacement piece (warranty and no cost). The piece was easy to replace. ,,,,

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast, effective, super easy to pump. Best pump value. I was in the BWCA for a 4 day trip and found this all but the perfect filter. I used to have a PUR Hiker and it filtered well but was a real chore to pump. No so with the Vario. On the Longer Life dual filter mode I found it significantly easier to pump than any filter I've tried. After 3 days, however, it began dripping water all over so I opened it up to switch to Faster Flow single filter. It worked fine in the Fast Flow mode in fact, it's so fast that I questioned it's effectiveness. Then I put raw water in a pan to boil and saw TONS of little critters swimming around. This was solid evidence to me that the Vario does the job it's supposed to even in the fast mode–no swimming critters af

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter For Fast Pumping and Large Groups. If you're looking for a quick filter, this is it. There are two different settings that you can use, one for quick pumping and one for longer filter life. I always use the longer filter life setting and this thing still blazes through liters and liters of water. It is a little heavier and bulkier than other filters out there, but for it's speed and ease of use I don't mind. I love the fact that it screws onto Nalgenes so you don't have to worry about spilling or extra hoses. I have had some leaking from the housing when pumping, but once I reseal it with the supplied lube it's good to go again. Also the charcoal makes the water taste great. You won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An absolutely great water filter I got this filter a while back because I was tired of borrowing other peoples' when I was going camping. Plus I had enough Moosejaw points saved up to get it for free so the price was right! I agree with the majority of the other reviewers when I say that this is a stellar filter. It's quick when you need it, and, with the activated carbon core you can drink with confidence from wherever you choose to fill your bottles. I especially like how a widemouth nalgene screws directly into the bottom so you don't have try and hold the bottles with your feet (or wish you had a third arm/prehensile tail) while you pump.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite piece of equipment I buy a lot of stuff from this site, sometimes compulsively. Two comments on that: (1) I have a problem (ha). (2) When I call one thing out of that mountain of things my favorite, the judgement is meaningful. I trust this filter with my life. Not only has its filter mechanism never failed, but its mechanical operations are smooth and waste very little of my arm-pumpin' fury. I don't even bother bringing back-up purification tablets anymore (extra ounces). Sure this weighs more than those tablets do, but (1) it's silly to bring both now and (2) this proves far tastier/works far better than those. I've never once cared about the added weight in my pack. The Vario, she's worth it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Carbon Core only good for 50 GAL, The product is only as good as it's weakest link It might be a very good device, but they mis-lead you by stating in very bold locations that this system is good for something like 1500 hundred pints or quarts, something like that. What they don't tell you is the Carbon Core filter is only good for like 50 Gal (200 liters) untill you read the doc that comes with the device.,,,,What pisses me off is that they do no display that bit of information as bold as the 1500 hundred; very mis-leading. Why hide that fact from the consumer like they do?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Katadyn is in a league of its own. In comparison with equivalently priced filter pumps, the Vario is a standout winner. It pumps much faster than the competition, and is uniquely adjustable depending on water conditions. The faster flow setting bypasses the outer filter, and sends the water straight through the carbon core. It is a bit on the heavy side, but I find it to be worthwhile, as it offers more options than the competition. Don't skimp on your water filter. Go katadyn or go home.
