The Vario Water Filter by Katadyn. The Vario combines individual efficiency with the simplest possible handling. The technology it uses consists of three filter levels: a high-performance glass fibre filter, a ceramic pre-filter that can be adjusted individually according to the cloudiness of the water, and active charcoal for eliminating odours. Anyone who needs up to two litres of drinking water per minute can use the glass fibre and active charcoal filter. If the water is extremely cloudy, the ceramic pre-filter can be fitted in a moment in order to extend the service life of the glass fibre filter. The Vario is compatible with most standard outdoor bottles and hydration bladders.

DECENT FEATURES of the Katadyn Vario Water Filter

  • Multi-Stage Filtration System - A simple turn engages a ceramic prefilter for longer life in dirty water or a pleated glassfiber filter in normal conditions

"Great Service from Katadyn"  05/05/12

Somewhere in between airline travel (baggage goons) and storage the plastic piece on the outside of the pump that holds the tubing for the pre-filter and brings water into the internal filters had become weakened. As I was prepping the unit for an AT adventure, this piece broke completely off the unit. This was the night before leaving and it was not a repair that could be made short of getting a brand new replacement piece. For this trip we used the steripen and sediment filter. Katadyn customer service rocked! They knew what I was talking about and immediately sent off a new replacement piece (warranty and no cost). The piece was easy to replace

"Worth its weight!"  04/29/12

I did a bit of shopping around and research when looking for a water filter. My buddy had a top of the line Katadyn, but I wanted something more economical and smaller. This product delivers both! It worked like a champ on my last hike, making my friends envious with it's double pumping action. Katadyn had has a well earned reputation for a reason. Highly recommend.

"Does its job!"  03/23/12

I have taken this backpacking once and it did its job very well. Clean clear water that tasted great. I'm sure that there is a smaller filter but this one works very well and is easy to use. Comes with everything you need!

"Great filter that works well!"  03/16/12

I have used this filter on multiple backpacking trips. It is an invaluable piece of gear to have. It is a bit heavy but worth its weight!

"Trust this in the wilderness"  01/21/12

I got this a few Christmases back and just got a chance to use it last year in the high Uintas. Got seven days of great water without a hitch. It does pack pretty small as well, worth bringing along on those long treks.

"Works great!"  01/02/12

Just got it in and tested out on a stream in the backyard. Very easy to use and stows away easily and compact. Also, from a minimalist perspective, this might just be light enough to bring along on trips where water sources are not reliable.

"Pump it till it hurts"  10/19/11

On a 4-day/3-night kayak camping trip in the ADKs, this filter processed more than 6 liters a day, and provided us with clean, neutral-tasting, safe drinking water. The pumping is a bit monotonous, but a necessary evil. The supplies accessories help to keep the unit in working order and the supplied bag keeps it all together. Nice!

"Get this water filter!"  10/02/11

This thing is great! I put it together with "easy to read instructions" (even for guys.)The filter will thread on top of a Nalgene and my SIGG water bottle as well! The intake hose is somewhat difficult to get onto the intake nipple (snicker) but they send you some nipple lube to squinch it on. It filters really fast too.

"Best filter for 4"  09/15/11

Probably the best value upto 4 backpacker. I got this because i've already used my frieds vario. It pumps fast both on pump out and in. Easy to clean! And love that a big mouth nalgene directly mounts in it so you could eliminate cross contaminiation. for me the 2 tube system have more chance of contamination when packing the filter back to it's pouch. Mounting a wide mouth bottle in this removes that possibility. Just cap that openning after using an you are good to go.

"Flows Like a Charm"  08/15/11

I've had the vario for over a year now, and I don't think I could go back to any other water filter. The double piston design ensures constant flow on both the up and down strokes, a nice thing when you have 10 nalgenes to fill. The adjustable dirty/clean water filter system is great for expeditions into the back country where your next water supply could come from anywhere. the additional screw on bottom easily attaches to any wide mouth bottle, and a special adapter allows for a reservoir hose to be attached, removing the hassle of digging it out of your pack.

"Water filter made perfect"  04/02/11

Yeah you can compare all the water filters and then come back here and purchase this one. It filters water so fast you will wonder if it is working at all. Just be sure you use it at home prior to using in the field (Duh). That way you won't get the black water that comes out after the first time you use it. Very easy to maintain also.
