FANTASTIC FILTER. THE BEST AND FIRST THING I PACK.Start with fairly clear water and it will last you all season on one cartridge if you rinse it at home after each trip. I've heard folks complain about the weight (within a couple of ounce of any pump), the bulkiness (within a dozen ci of any pump)and the speed (as fast as most pumps). NONSENSE! If you're a "gram wienie", drops or tabs are lighter, but nothing is easier than filling this filter and letting it do it's thing while you get a bite to eat, set up camp, etc. Within 20 minutes there's enough water to quench the thirst of 6 or more and you've got the water for your next meal. Fill it before bed and in the morning you've got 2+gallons to last you until dinner.

Great filter, no pumping filters a high volumeI like this filter a lot. I used it for a five day backcountry canoe trip with seven people, and it was able to handle the bulk of the water filtration needs for the group. It is fast and generally effortless, and gets the water clean. ,,,,You will need a larger water source, as you have to dip the whole bag into the water to fill it (no problem for canoe camping). The flow does slow down with extended use, and the filter starts to clog, but we were able to (carefully) disassemble and clean the filter with clean water in the backcountry, and the flow rate sped up quite a bit. Overall a great product.

A+ for convienence, B+ for durability. If I'm with a group I think this will probably always be my go-to filtration system for camp. It can filter a large amount of water in relatively little time...as long as it's working properly. It seemed like (even with careful water selection) the filter was always getting clogged up, making filtration painfully slow. Also, we used multiple filters and they all developed small leaks somewhere around the filter housing (like the filter refused to sit properly where it was supposed to. None of these problems were deal-breakers, I'd buy it again, but It was definitely a love-hate relationship at times.

Love it.. Just waiting for Katadyn to respond to my request for a Backpacker version.Great piece of equipment, especially for a guy who carried iodine as a main treatment. Now I have a solution that includes a main waterbag, and a filter, for less weight than I used to carry for a pump solution. And, with a shower attachment... well enough said. I'm not an ultra-lightweighter, but I am trying to find the balance between comfort, safety, and weight. This is it, at least until Katadyn considers my request for a lighter weight bag. And since I usually have company in camp, this is an AWESOME piece of gear.

ZenMan... Grasshopper, how is it that you do not hear these things?

Gravity - my arch nemesis and greatest ally!Gravity is great - it just keeps going no matter what! Pair this with a bottle adapter and you can fill large volumes without keeping an eye on it. If you can I'd recommend straining the water first if it's really silty. Also helps to keep the cleanable screen pushed towards the head of the filter (eg: bottom when hanging) since the silt will tend to settle and this part of the filter sees more service once the bag is close to empty. We usually carry a pump and some tabs as a back-up for when gravity gets sick of the bourgeois oppression.

works great for small or big groups. Why pump?Although this is advertised as a "Base Camp" item, it weighs the same as a small pump filter. I use it for backpacking since I can make one trip to the water source and just filter what I need for dinner, morning, next day without multiple trips. It works without effort, nothing to break. Once in a while, or when trip ends, I just "back fill" it to clean out the filter. A pump just makes no sense once you try this. Cheaper. Same filter. No work. Nothing to break. Easy to filter enough water for a small group, or just for one. I am sold!

Good for about 15 gallons.I outfitted three crews of eight people each with a Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter for a week trip to Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota. Each crew had similiar experiences with the base camp filter. It worked great for the first three to four days then got so slow it was almost worthless. My crew called it the still. Second half of the week we let it drip all night to get about a gallon of water. We tried to rinse filter off per the instructions, but it did not help. Good thing we had a back-up pump and some purification drops.

Simple, intuitive, FABULOUS!This filter is fabulous! Long-gone are the days of huddling over the slimy rock near the pond/stream while I pray my filter doesn't slide into the grime. Now, I take bottle and fill up the filter, walk back to camp, and by the time I've got the stove lit there is clean water for cooking, drinking, mixing . I already have two other Katadyn filters, but couldn't resist getting this gravity fed, ingenious filter. Sometimes you simply have to get something because it does a far superior job than what you already have.
