"A+ for convienence, B+ for durability." 04/19/13
If I'm with a group I think this will probably always be my go-to filtration system for camp. It can filter a large amount of water in relatively little time...as long as it's working properly. It seemed like (even with careful water selection) the filter was always getting clogged up, making filtration painfully slow. Also, we used multiple filters and they all developed small leaks somewhere around the filter housing (like the filter refused to sit properly where it was supposed to. None of these problems were deal-breakers, I'd buy it again, but It was definitely a love-hate relationship at times.
"works great for small or big groups. Why pump?" 02/13/13
Although this is advertised as a "Base Camp" item, it weighs the same as a small pump filter. I use it for backpacking since I can make one trip to the water source and just filter what I need for dinner, morning, next day without multiple trips. It works without effort, nothing to break. Once in a while, or when trip ends, I just "back fill" it to clean out the filter. A pump just makes no sense once you try this. Cheaper. Same filter. No work. Nothing to break. Easy to filter enough water for a small group, or just for one. I am sold!
"Great filter, no pumping filters a high volume" 02/08/12
I like this filter a lot. I used it for a five day backcountry canoe trip with seven people, and it was able to handle the bulk of the water filtration needs for the group. It is fast and generally effortless, and gets the water clean. You will need a larger water source, as you have to dip the whole bag into the water to fill it (no problem for canoe camping). The flow does slow down with extended use, and the filter starts to clog, but we were able to (carefully) disassemble and clean the filter with clean water in the backcountry, and the flow rate sped up quite a bit. Overall a great product.
"No more pumping" 11/26/11
This filter rocks. We just used this filter on a week long trip with four guys. It filled all of our water bottles and even our cooking water since its so easy to use. Now that I own this I will never pump water again.
"Great for Groups" 11/04/11
I bought this filter about a month ago and have already used it twice, one four day hike and one two day. Right out of the box its super easy to assemble and stores nicely in my pack. During the four day hike I was able to use it several times. Between me and three others this filter was able to fill all of our hydration packs with ease. Great tasting water and a breeze to use on the trail.I would definitely recommend this filter to anyone especially when traveling with a group.
"Simple Design, Great Water" 09/11/11
This water filter is excellent for larger groups. And here's the bonus: no pumping or having to put in those chlorine tablets! Just find some place to hang it and you are golden! In some instances we just had a group member hold it up while we got the water. The water taste great. There isn't any funny smell or taste. Just water. I found the flow rate to be quite good: around a Liter/minute and you don't do much! It packs down super small which is another plus.
"Fast, Easy." 06/26/11
Fast and easy water filtration. Very useful when hiking with a group. Used on Grand Canyon trip with 11 people. Filtered enough water for all of us with no pumping involved. Just pull water from stream, hang in tree and relax while gravity does the work for you.
"Gravity - my arch nemesis and greatest ally!" 05/09/11
Gravity is great - it just keeps going no matter what! Pair this with a bottle adapter and you can fill large volumes without keeping an eye on it. If you can I'd recommend straining the water first if it's really silty. Also helps to keep the cleanable screen pushed towards the head of the filter (eg: bottom when hanging) since the silt will tend to settle and this part of the filter sees more service once the bag is close to empty. We usually carry a pump and some tabs as a back-up for when gravity gets sick of the bourgeois oppression.
"Great for 2-4 people basecamp. Bad for 8-10." 08/18/10
Went to the BWCA for a HOT August trip. 75-90F for 3 days with a little breeze. The filter worked great the first few times we filled it up and used it. After about the 4th refill of the bladder, the filter started to clog up. If you are patient you can wait for 10-15 minutes for a nalgene to fill, but having a backup filter would be recommended on long trips with a lot of thirsty people. You CAN rinse it out and salvage the filter by backflushing with freshwater from the tap (syringes work GREAT!) Good Luck!
"This filter is the bomb! Absoulutely love it." 05/28/10
Last summer I was on a canoe trip in the Boundry Waters and our guide had this filter. It made things much easier around the camp. I decided to purchase one for myself. I've used it twice and it has not let me down. Easy cleaning once I got home. I would not leave home without it if I were on a trip with a base camp. I would recommend this product to anyone.
"Simplicity" 01/28/10
We took 2 of these with to the BWCA for 7 guys and they worked flawless. We would just scoop up some water, hang it from a tree and let it fill up a water jug. "It was so easy a caveman could do it". Seriously though, a great water filter for base camp use.
