The White Lightnin' Tarp by Granite Gear. More and more hikers are going ultralight. That's why we chose now to introduce an ultralight tarp that we've been brewing for quite some time. This simple shelter is engineered to perform. The edges have a slight catenary cut that helps keep the whole thing taut. The edges and center seam are bound with Tension Tape which allows the ultralight 30-D Sil Cordura Ripstop fabric to be stretched tight as a drum from eight points along the edge and one in the center. After setup, the corners can be tightened without re-tying. Comes with micro cordage and stuffs into it's own attached stuff sack.Weights include self storing stuff sack and guy lines (no stakes). Tension Tape and quick adjustment make the White Lightnin' an ultralight tarp that's easy to pitch.

"Excellent product" 03/13/12
Picked this up Last year and have used it more than a 1/2 dozen times. It is lightweight and held up well to less than tender hands and environments. The design makes for a nice, tight canopy free of dips allowing water to run off smoothly.Very well designed and built.Would recommend this for anyone looking for a large'ish size durable effective tarp for backcountry camping.

Compact, light, bombproof. Catenary cut means it's not flapping in the breeze like plain, square tarps are prone to do if you don't get every last tie-out just right. Different sizes fit different needs. It *is* just a bit expensive, but you get what you pay for. One oddity: Granite Gear seems schizophrenic about the color -- the image is all blue, but the tarp (in some cases, at least) is half blue, half white. Huh? How about another color, GG? Green? Gray?

I've been looking for an awesome tarp for a little while now and decided to splurge on these (that sounds kind of dirty). I've found this tarp to be a reasonably solid silnylon tarp, but for the price I kind of expected something a little better.I wish Moosejaw could consider carrying more tarps like the MacCat tarp or the Warbonnet Superfly. I don't think I'll be sticking with this tarp, but it is a pretty decent tarp.I should also point out that when I got them the tarps were half blue and half white, not all blue like they are depicted in the photo.

I love sil-nylon. This tarp would make a great shelter for me, but I usually hike with a lady, so it has to suffice as a front porch for our 20-room tent. This thing keeps gear dry, keeps people dry, keeps that bear that's going through all your gear dry. Packs up nice and small, has plenty of tie-out straps - which are adjustable to really tighten everything up. Buy it. Don't think about it, just buy it.

I love this tarp and recently took it to the high peaks region and it worked amazingly well. its easy to pitch in tons of positions, super light and stuffs extremely small and easily. I could use a compression sack to get it smaller, but theres no need. It also looks really cool. Ive started using my Hubba HP less and less for backpacking trips after getting this, its nice to shed the weight of poles, footprints, etc it also makes a sick chill area for you and your friends to get nice and toasty in and do some cookin

super lightweight, stuffs into the dead space of your pack like a pro. no stakes and/or poles = even lighter = happy backpacker. there are always things in your environment that will suffice & trekking poles are a must.definitely experienced strong bursts of wind rather frequently in the desert portion of utah. just make sure the rocks you use to tie off the ends are sturdy enough for raging gusts. i learned that via user error.i would recommend this gem 2 anyone striving 2 keep it simple, light, durable, versatile & quick reliability.thumbs up for sure

This thing was designed thoughtfully and made well. The pull straps at the corner make it easy to tighten and the reinforced edges make me confident it will hold up well. It's a slippery little thing, and kind of ugly for some reason mine is blue on one side and white on the other, but it'll make an awesome emergency shelter and/or sunshade.

I used the tarp for the first time this past weekend and everything went great. My only recommendation is to add something reflective to the tarp tie outs, etc to help find it on those really dark nights. Simple to pitch, light, and great quality.

C'on! 190 smacks for a tarp! Who are you kidding! But I love this thing. I wanted 10 x12 to use as a kitchen tarp on Boy Scout backpacking trips. I couldn't find another ultralight that big. We carry it for group shelter during meals it'll cover 10 squirmy scouts and then a couple of us sleep under it. It is next to weightless and easy to set up. GG uses bomber construction. You can stretch it tight as a drum without a worry. It even comes with ultra light cord. The strap harness for trekking poles is goofy I always work around it. I just bought another one for a second crew.

I used this tarp for a thru hike of the AT and loved it. Although mine has about fifty patched holes in it from campfire sparks I think it will last another 2,000 miles. My previos tarp failed and I bought this one because it was the only tarp I could find near the trail on a resuply. I hated how much money it cost, but The catenary side and roof cuts make it worth the money. the curved cuts alow it to stay flap free in storms, and keep it tight in the wind. Also the reinforced outer edge make this tarp tough as mother nature. just keep it away from fire!
"Our Troop's choice" 04/16/06
Our Boy Scout Troop needed a light weight easy to put-up, no hassle tarp for backpacking. The Granite Gear White Lightnin’ was the hands down choice. We looked at several tarps, but in the end there was no comparison. It was not the cheapest, but for our Troop, it was the one to go with. Although it is shown in white it also comes in blue.
