Great chargerGot the Sherpa 50 for an Asia business trip. The Sherpa 50 has given me some great piece of mind. I wasn't worried about not having enough juice for my laptop and cell phone. My cell is my life line and I've been in those situations where every drop of power counts. So cool not to have that anxiety. It also charged my laptop and phone really quickly. I don't know how they do this, but it seemed to just discharge the batteries and charge the phone and laptop really fast. I used the direct laptop port with my Lenovo and it worked like a charm. Got a few people asking about it too. I'm looking forward to taking it out backpacking to power up my phone, camera and laptop. Should be great.

One year ownership reviewSo, it's been just over a year since I bought my Sherpa 50 from Cal's Sporting Armory online. My Sherpa 50 has performed well over all for the first year, but now the built-in LED light is really dim and not useful. And the switch for the 12V/Laptop outputs doesn't function properly anymore, when switched to the OFF position either the 12V or Laptop light illuminates so basically the switch has gone bad.
With that stated I'd recommend buying this product however I'd highly recommend buying a retailers 1 or 2 year extended warranty/replacement plan because you're out of luck after the Goal Zero one year warranty expires.

DME - CPAP ExperienceI purchased the Sherpa 50 for its compact size and ability to add an inverter right to the pack it's self, no need to carry 2 separate items. While camping our Generator went down and so did the only 12v inverter we had. Suffering from Sleep Apnea is life or death, well I remembered I had our Sherpa 50 in the bag, it gave me @ 4 hours of run time, not quite a full night sleep but better than nothing. Gave it a full charge the next day and only got about 3 the next night worked well, but seemed to need just a bit more. Really like the USB / and flash light / wish the LED had a bit harder switch, got bumped and came on several times. Needs a switch like the one on the inverter / flat and a bit harder to switch on..

Failed due to moisture in tent after 2 expeditionI paired this unit with the 20 watt panel at base camp and it worked like a champ on a successfull K2 expedition (very rugged approach and variable weather). I just completed a successful Annapurna expedition and it died half way through. I always keep the Sherpa 50 out of the weather in my vestibule but condensation in the tent triggered one of the temperature sensors and shut it down. It has not recovered. I know this isn't water proof. I'm an electrical engineer and not affraid to take it apart but the 2nd temp sensor is elusive without a hardware diagram. It has been a great system and very rugged but I'm sad to lose something this expensive on it's second expedition.

Sherpa 50 Saved The DayVery useful and handy to have in many situations. Travel, around the house, backpacking, motorcycle camping. My truck broke down in western Kansas just as a blizzard was coming through. The freeway was closed up ahead and I had no way to get to a hotel on my own. My phone was just about dead so I plugged into the Sherpa 50 and was able to alert my family as well as contact the local Sheriff's office for a ride to a hotel 30 miles down the road. At worst my life was in danger, at best it would have been a truly awful night in below freezing temperatures inside my truck. Goal Zero products have come in handy plenty of times, but this time I was truly grateful to have the Sherpa 50 along for the ride.

Sherpa 50 + Mac Book Pro 13"(without the inverter)This is an amazing product. Well finished, robust and versatile.
I even connected my Mac Book Pro 13" Retina directly to the 19V output by customising my original Mac's charger. The Sherpa 50 has enough juice to fill the battery from 0% to 75% which represents about 5 hours of fully operating the Mac Book. More than enough for me, since on a fully sunny day here I can charge my Sherpa around 1.5 times/day equalling 7-8 hours of using my Mac daily relying only on sun.
For those interested here are some photos of my custom 19V to MagSafe 2 cable. As far as my electrical skills go, this should be perfectly safe both for the Mac and the Sherpa. If you want to try this setup at home, you only need to find the right plugs and then just cut the Mac's charger cable and mold it to the plugs, nothing else. If performed correctly, you can still roll the cable around the charger. The MagSafe's orange/green light will work as usual and your Mac won't have a clue that something changed since the charger's ID is actually on the MagSafe plug, not on the charger itself.
Unfortunately, Apple has a patent on the MagSafe so nobody will ever sell this to you. Only you can make it and you should never tell Apple about it, nor hold me responsible if any damage should occur ;)
I'm planning to camp and work for the following 2 months and this product just made it possible!

I got this product for Christmas I love it charged my phone my brother's phone and my dads phone and it was stil at 80% battry capacity at witch point I pluged it into a bolder 30 and it was charged to 100% in 1-2 hours. I took it on a ski trip and brought a nomad 7. it kept my phone charged on the Mountain but it was tricky to keep it at a functining temperature (30 degrees or higher). At the lodge I put my nomad in a window where it had direct sun light in 30 minits I got about 10% charge when I charged a laptop it drained the power pack fast in about 50 minutes to an hour it was at 60% and my laptop got about a 25-30% boost. I have no complaints and it was a grate gift.

without power on the gulfcoast from
Just right for on the goGreat size to throw in pack and go. Depending on laptop will not fully charge laptop. Best for smaller handheld devices. Do not depend on the Sherpa 50 to charge a laptop completely. It will only get you by to get to more a more reliable power-source. It does work well with a laptop but be aware of battery size. When charging with Nomad 13, for fastest charge you will need direct sunlight. Panel does not like cloudy are overcast days. When your working with a cellphone, tablet, notebook, and a camera in situations where size and weight is an issue (working out of a backpack) the Sherpa 50 with a Nomad 13 should keep you on task for several days more if you didn't have solar charged power source when there is no other readily available power sources.
