In my experience, the water proofing is the most difficult aspect to provide consistent performance. Over the lifetime of the boot, the adhesive used to bond the material will weaken and the outermost materials will begin to fray. However, most modern day manufacturers use highly resilient adhesives that will stand the test of time. The most challenging situations are those that involve heat. ,,,,Applying heat to a shoe can be detrimental. Heating a shoe has the potential for disaster because the adhesives used to manufacture(most) shoes is activated by heat. Therefore, by applying heat, the adhesive will soften and become pliable. Any pressure, torque, or abrasions taking place, while the materials are still warm, have the potential to separate the two materials.
