FEATURES of the Garmin fenix 2 Training Watch Performance Bundle
Training watch packed with features for multi-sport athletes
Tracks distance, pace and heart rate (HRM-Run IS included in the Performance Bundle, but Garmin Heart rate monitors are sold separately)
Calculates recovery time and VO2 max estimate (when used with a heart rate monitor)
HRM-Run monitor adds data for cadence, ground contact time and vertical oscillation
Connected features, including uploads to Garmin Connect and BaseCamp for live tracking and sharing
High-sensitivity GPS positioning, 3-axis compass with altimeter and barometer
At-A-Glance Training Information allows you to get quick access to current pace, distance, split times and whether you are ahead or behind your target pace
Recovery Time feature estimates your state of recovery immediately following a run and operates in a countdown mode until the next activity. Recovery can range from 6 to 96 hours.
Recovery Check provides a real-time assessment of your recovery in the first several minutes of a run
Built-in barometric altimeter provides accurate elevation information so you can keep track of your ascent and descent
Built-in barometer can help you monitor and predict weather changes by showing you short-term changes in the barometric air pressure. If the barometric pressure begins a steady decline, this could be a warning of an impending storm. So neat.
3-axis electronic compass helps you keep your bearing whether you're moving or not
Temperature Sensor allows you to gain insight into temperature trends and be aware how rapidly the temperature is rising or falling. This can help determine clothing and shelter needs or whether it's time to turn back.
Wireless Unit-to-unit Communication makes it possible to easily share tracks, waypoints, routes and paperless geocaches wirelessly with other compatible Garmin GPS units and smartphones. The fenix 2 is equipped with both ANT+ capabilities and Bluetooth technology so you can also pair fenix with several external devices, such as a Garmin temperature sensor, heart rate monitor and speed/cadence bike sensor.

"Was concerned based on prior reviews, but Garmin worked out software issues"
Honestly, even though I have other Garmin products that work well, I was worried about buying this watch. My two main concerns were (1) lack of signal would lead to missing data, and (2) device would freeze. Neither of these things have occurred during rides or runs. It has kept its signal during my runs, and I even tested it alongside the Garmin edge 705--they both had the same time and data overall, even the same wattage measured via my powertap hub. I was seriously considering the Suunto Ambit3, but after looking at the features which are largely the same, I opted for the Fenix 2 because it will be several hundred dollars cheaper than the comparable Suunto watch. If considering this watch you should know several things which the "specs" on the web will not disclose. First, the bluetooth (to receive updates from your phone like text messages) will not work at the same time as ANT+ sensors. Second, your battery life is around 10-11 hours with sensors running, not 50 hours...
Garmin's Fenix 2 Performer Bundle includes a heart rate monitor for out-of-the-box compatibility and functionality. The Fenix also utilizes Garmin's GPS technology to provide navigation and tracking functionalities to guide your next adventure, whether by road, trail, or machete-hacked jungle. The built-in sensors give you the information on heading, elevation, and weather to guide you, in simplest terms, from point A to point B. On top of electronics worthy of the space program, the Fenix was built to endure the harshest abuse that Mother Nature can dish out and look good doing it.it's good for trail running.
Just wore this for The North Face 50 Miler in Washington, DC and loved it. Battery lasted the entire 10 hours, never lost satellite, and tough enough to take some scrapes after a couple of falls. Coupled with the HRM, the amount of data collected is more than I know what to do with, which is a good thing.
"Phenomenal Product, I would buy it for any endurance athlete"
Love this, it's a hiking watch combined with the 910XT, and is absolutely phenomenal. the newer firmware updates have tackled all possible issues. The HRM-Run is great and so descriptive. Upon uploading to Strava and Garmin Connect, the watch changes everything about how I train for races and triathlons. The features within the watch are something I haven't found in any other training device for endurance. Between cadence, vertical oscillation, and ground contact time while running, the way I train has been changed tenfold. It also will be phenomenal for hiking, and backpacking as it has no issue finding satellites anywhere!
The quality of watch seems nice, but the altimeter seems to have trouble honing in on real-time elevation. However, as long as you sync with Garmin Connect after your workout this does not matter as there is an option to autocorrect elevation based on maps and local area surveys. GPS unit seems to be fairly accurate, especially when WAAP is turned on. I like being able to create routes and workouts in Garmin Connect. I bought this watch to use with running, backpacking, swimming and cycling. If running is the only activity you plan on using the watch for, you might want to consider Garmin 620, or Suunto Ambit2R. Battery charges fast. Battery life is good when used as a daily watch and only drops by a couple percent when I run 4-5 miles. I would use Bluetooth function with caution if you need the battery to last a few days. The provided Garmin base map that is a joke, but you can find free third party maps. Although frowned upon by Garmin they are easy to install using Garmin software.
