Ugly? You bet! They've got a kind of very 1930s-40s "bergshue" (sp?) look about them minus the cleats and box toe, but I dig 'em. I'm not a recreational mountaineering type of guy or anything, so I'm not really sure if my opinion matters on this site or not, but here it goes. I spend a good part of the year in some really nasty places in Utah and California on the job and these work for me. The laces are really horrible, agreed, and they've been replaced, but I can do 14-16 hours in them without any issues that wouldn't come up from just being on your feet in rocky terrain working your a** off all day wearing any other type of boot. I bought *two* pairs of these if that helps show my love. These replaced my Vasques from 1996 that are now retired. No, they're not the same as Italian made Vasques, but it's 2014 not 1996 and these aren't made in China.
I have the Overton version of the Mountain Light boot, which is the same as the ones listed here, but with suede finished leather and a slightly different sole. Caution - the break-in period was long. I think I wore them for a good 3 to 4 weeks before they conformed to my feet. They have moulded nicely and are my go-to for just about any outdoor pursuit. As stated, they do not have an insole. I found that ordering 1/2 size down and using a 3/4 length after market insole was the best option for fitting my feet and comfort. I know of others who have purchased their true size and then purchased a full-length insole and stated that worked best for them. Bottom line, awesome boots. Solid and well-worth the hefty price tag.
I purchased these from a website named for a rainforest region in South America because they were significantly discounted. They were not appropriate for me. Very heavy, bulky, uncomfortable, and ugly. I'm sure there is a market for this type of footwear -- I am not in that market. Also, the laces don't stay tied. I returned them for a different pair of Danners
