The Best Snowshoe on the MarketA bold claim, true. Why are they the best snowshoes currently on the market? Because of the shape, and the bindings.
But first, a bit of background. Modern snowshoes are all, without exception, made of high quality aluminum for the frames. The deckings are made out of a variety of materials, but in the main they all hold up well and are tear resistant. This means that if you puncture one, it won't shred before your backcountry trip is over. Crampons are similarly similar: they all work.
That leaves shape and bindings. The tapered shape of Crescent Moon snowshoes means that you can walk more normally--more like a person, and less like a duck. The shape of the shoes is such that you don't have to alter your stride. No more duck walks with Crescent Moons! Over the course of a multi-day trip, your hips will thank you.
Now, the bindings: simply the best. The ratcheting system used in Crescent Moons is both durable and simple to use. This technology has been used in cycling shoes as well--the plastic notched strap goes through the ratchet, which is then engaged until they are tight. Your boots will never involuntarily come out of a Crescent Moon snowshoe binding.
I have used these extensively in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on the Minnesota-Canadian border, and recommend them without hesitation. The icing on the cake? They're US made. How about that?
