"My favorite mapping tool..."  12/09/09

I do a fair bit of mapping for work and play. I use the Quad-Tool primarily for the UTM scale (which inherently provides distance in meters) but it also measures distance in feet/miles, slope angle, and Lat/Long (not real useful for on-the-ground navigating in my opinion but I grew up with UTM's). At about 7.5 x 1.6 inches, it is more compact and versatile than the GI Coordinate scale/protractors. On the other hand, the Quad-Tool is expensive for what it is (a small plastic 'ruler') and is only applicable to 1:24,000 scale--great if you only use USGS Quad maps, not so much if you don't.
