I have owned this compass for a few years. It's simple and mostly featureless. On well marked trails this may be sufficient for some, but for hard core bushwacking it might be best to spend a bit more. That being said, it's lightweight, well built, and inexpensive so if you want to throw a compass in your bag just to feel outdoorsy, you can't go wrong with this one.
"There are better peices of equipment to trust your life to. This is not it."
It just has to point North, right? No. Brunton offers this model for no apparent reason other than to sell a compass to people who will place it in their ten-essentials bag and never have to use it. It is missing so many key features found in other brands. Nothing glows. The base plate should be longer, allowing for a lengthened index line. It has a poor excuse for a direction-of travel-arrow. No Magnifier? That should be standard. Orienting arrow is an afterthought. A bi-color black & red magnetic needle is preferred for visibility over the all black needle-circle-thing. And lastly, the compass housing is jumbled, hard to turn and dingy in color. I prefer a neon color. Am I picky? Yes. This is an important piece of kit. Details matter with this device. You don't need the Porsche, but this is not even up to speed with the Tercel. Check out the Silva Explorer please before purchasing this compass. Moosejaw should consider offering some of the Silva's line-up as well on their site.
"Great compass for price, is your basic compass though"
It is durable, easy to use, and includes the added capability of tool-free declination adjustment. That is hard to use accurately. The NSEW indicators need to be a little easier to read at a glance. It would have made more sense if those marks were either embossed on the top of the gray ring, rather than the sides, or if they were embossed with a color that contrasts with the gray of the ring itself. In dark shade, or failing daylight, it would be nice to be able to see those marks more readily.Other than that, a solid, affordable piece of gear that no hiking pack should be without.
