"Standard Figure 8" 12/30/11
I've had one of these for a couple years now, I rarely use it because I usually prefer to belay and rappel on an ATC but if you are looking for an 8 this is a good one. It's much lighter and cheaper than a safety 8 and functions the same minus the wings. The price on this has gone up slightly since I bought one. I think they used to be around $8, but at $15 it is still a good deal. I would recommend to a friend looking for an 8.
"Best of the best" 12/30/11
This is the only 8 I would use for rappelling. Light, strong, and simple to use. The small hole can be used as a belay plate, however it puts a sharp bend in the rope and has a tendency to twist the rope and make lowering difficult, especially while belaying heavier climbers. It will still work if no other device is available, just not my personal go to for belaying. However, I would not choose anything else when it comes to rappelling!
"Can't get any better" 03/28/11
This is the original, I've had it for several years and its never done me wrong. If you are a climber that likes to stick to the basics this one is definitely for you. For fifteen dollars its a great buy. You can keep this one in your bag of belays forever.
"Amazing product" 03/23/11
This is an amazing product thats is cheap and fairly easy to use.... i had my girlfriend rapelling in 10min and she has never touched climbing equipment in her life.... easy to setup and easy to use gets you flying down the wall in no time.... great for beginners wanting to get into the sport
"Pretty Standard" 12/29/10
This is a solid pretty standard figure eight. You only need one unless you lose it. I have had it for a long time and it is still in great shape. The only thing to note is that if you use this a lot to pick up some climbing gloves as well. The rope can tend to get away from you if you can not get a great grip on it. Make sure to learn how to properly use this before you try it for people just learning to climb.
"Basic relay device without any flaws" 12/11/10
This is a standard 8 shaped belay device, it's easy and simple. However I do prefer a belay device since it can also be used for other purposes.
"Awesome" 12/07/10
Awesome for rappeling, works great with your rope doubled but way funner single, gives plenty of friction but not too much. The shape is great. Works great belaying top rope in my opinion, maybe not as much friction locked as an atc or what have you but i've never had an issue. Good size but not real heavy. Definitely recommend it over other figure 8 style devices i've used (O.P & Mammut), get it!
"The best basic eight" 09/26/10
The oval design is the key thing here. If your new to rappelling or prone to being a klutz this thing is great. the oval design makes it much harder for the rope to girth hitch/ larks head when you fall upside down and or do something stupid. we use these when teaching new scouts how to rappel and the simple design improvement of the oval has saved us countless rescues from kids getting stuck on the rope half way down to the bottom. It doesnt happen often,. but with complete beginners in a scout troop with lots and lots of kids going down the rope, it used tto happen more than youd think with the old style eight. buy this ! Love the Madness !
"good light, compact rapel device" 06/09/10
I mostly use this for repelling because it's light and quick to throw on the rope (especically a single). Works well as a belay device, too, but more labour-intensive than an ATC. Still, it's low-weight and fast to use.
