"Have had it for two years and works as new!"
It is very comfortable and is incredibly light. The light itself is very bright and its different functions have been incredibly useful. The waterproofing also held up great in a pretty decent downpour. The light is super bright with the option to use at 75% or 100% with a finger touch on the side of the light. You can use the dimmer to adjust it to a very low light and back to 100% with the touch of a finger. It has 3 options, bright leds, not so bright leds and the red leds. There is a dimmer function and a strobe function for a three diferent modes. The only thing worse is that it is harder to press the main button. With gloves it is very hard to know if you got your finger on it and so much force is needed with each attempt. Fumbling around gets annoying fast. Otherwise, it is good
The good; Lots of settings. Puts out a lot of light on the high setting. I like the fact thats its able to dim. The red lights are nice for reading or eating especially when there are lots of bugs flying around. The bad. I had it as my back up light on a river trip. I just kept in my daypack. First time I pulled it out to use it, it had gotten damp and didn't want to work correctly. Opened it up and it had a slight amount of moisture in it. Dried it all out and installed fresh batteries and it worked great. Couple days latter I swam a small creek and it leaked again! Overall it worked well. Seems to need new batteries whenever it leaks. Kind of bummer as I bought because it was supposed to be waterproof.
I have used the Black Diamond Storm headlamp for several years now. This review pertains to the older version so I can't comment on the new feature of touch / tapping to lower the power level? My initial use of this head light was for a 30 hour adventure race. It was used for navigating waterways and trails at night on foot and by canoe. It might even be bright enough for lower speed mountain biking but I had a much more powerful system for offroad use.The beam throw on spotlight mode is impressive and very useful. The flood mode is great for close up work like reading maps and such. Most of the time I used the spot mode when on the move. It has enough side spill to cover the peripheral view without too much tunnel effect. Love the lockout mode that prevents the light from coming on accidentally when in one's pack. This is incredibly useful as it means you won't be suprised by a dead lamp when you need it most. All lamps should have this feature. Great comfortable band too.
"Works, but I'm very concerned about the quality of the manufacturing."
I received the product in April 2014. The headlamp is bright as all heck, and the beam goes for a long distance. It also appears to be heavily sealed to the elements. If these perks were the end of it, I would completely love this headlamp. However, on first receiving it I was greeted with the clicking sound of some sort of plastic bouncing around on the inside of the lamp. The fallen part in question was not in the part of the case with the batteries, so it must have been in the deeper portions of the headlamp. Headlamps are not supposed to have parts bouncing around inside of them. The LED on the headlamp, while bright, also makes a light squealing noise when turned on.Yes the headlamp is nice, and yes it feels like it might last a long time, but the sounds coming from the inside of it suggest otherwise. I'm issuing a warranty claim to Black Diamond, so I guess I'll see where this goes.
I've had many headlamps from other companies and this was my first Black Diamond headlamp. I am totally impressed with this light! It is super bright at 160 lumens max output, which is more than adequate for most purposes. For night hikes and early morning summit starts I usually can easily get by with dimming the light, which is easy to do with the touch sensitive housing. For cooking, working around camp, and reading, it also has 2 smaller LED lights which provide a softer flood light to the area which is great. Furthermore, it has 2 red LEDS to use at night...these don't dim your vision the way bright white light does at night...looks cool but not sure how much I will use this feature. And the light is waterproof for sloshing through night rain storms or if you get dunked in your canoe your light will still work. Battery life seems pretty good...I've used it on 3 weekend camping trips so far and can't even tell that the battery is dimming yet. Overall a great buy!
I came to this sight to by my third light. I bought one last year and liked it so much I bought one for my wife. We like them so much I came back to buy a spare. I use the light daily. I have horses and dogs that I care for very early in the morning and after dark in the evening. It gets used for cleaning, stalls and kennels as well as inspecting the animals while doing chores. The flood works great for walking in the woods, herding horses or when I go out deer hunting. The red light works great for not scaring deer when walking to a stand. The spot light is bright enough to use when doing close work that needs to be well light or looking for horses in a large pasture. I have also used it for tracking blood trails while hunting. Best light for the money. If you are looking for a good all around light without breaking the bank, this is a good choice
I've been looking for the right headlamp for some time. I've tried Energizer, Princeton Tech, Mammut etc, but this one is definitely my favorite so far. After my first trip with the storm, I bought 4 more for family and friends.Pros: -Plenty bright enough for night hiking on the brightest setting-has a red led setting if you don't want to blind your partners.-I love being able to lock the "on button" as I have had several headlamps with drained batteries after after they switched themselves on in my pack.-Waterproof, while not vital for my application, is a great feature.-The dimming feature is great.Cons:-All those features make it weigh a little bit more than other headlamps-Requires four AAAs instead of the standard three-May be overkill for most applications
"Powerful Light with pretty easy to learn settings"
I haven't had a chance to go out into the wild and use it, but walking outside by the shoreline at night it came in handy. Went through all the settings while on the walk and it was pretty easy to pick up after first time use. Definitely worth taking a look at the Black Diamond Storm.
