Optimizing a blend of focused and peripheral light, the streamlined Spot Headlamp by Black Diamond produces an amazing amount of light for a lamp that fits in your pocket. Housed in a reflector, the one-watt LED throws a far-reaching beam-plenty strong enough for pre-dawn approaches or route finding during a through-the-night single push. When all you need is close-range light, switch modes and use the three proximity LEDs, which emit ambient light for more than 140 hours. A single switch on top lets you choose from four lighting levels for both modes-min, mid, max and strobe-to dial-in the light output to your needs. The batteries-up-front design works great for reading when you're tent-bound while waiting for a weather window.

"Incredible distance!" 05/10/11
I was so surprised at how far the max light setting reached and how much it lit up the area! There are several settings, so you can dim it down when needed. You also have a blinking option. It's very light on your head and quite durable. I've had mine for about a year and am so glad I invested in this one in particular. The only thing I wish it had was a red light, for use in a tent when other people are trying to sleep. But the distance the light reaches is worth it!
"Best headlamp on the market for the price! Anything more would be too heavy, less not enough light" 04/02/11
The spot mode is excellent for those alpine starts when you're trying to find the route. I previously experimented with a few different models of headlamp, the petzl tacktika plus and also the petzl Duo LED 5. I found that the tacktika (pretty much the same as all the tikka models) did not give me the light I wanted on alpine aproaches in the Cascades. The Duo, while giving me the light I wanted, was a bit overkill and heavy with the 4 AA's required. (NB The button on the spot is a bit touchy, and it alternates between modes (spot and LED) every time you turn it on and off.)
"Get it" 12/28/10
It's lightweight, comfortable, and has good battery life. The tilt feature is also neat allowing you to point the light where you are hiking. Also works well if you want to read in the tent. Gotta have a headlamp for any long hike.
"Good, solid light- while it lasts." 11/24/10
This was my first LED headlamp. The batteries are in the front which I like, not stuck in the back. Battery life is very good- probably about 30-50 hours in the field. There are four modes, bright/dim spot, bright/dim 3 LEDs, and a strobe function. The button is large and pressable with gloves on. The unit is lightweight and doesn't fatigue your head or neck. I've worn it in light rain and had no problems though I wouldn't count on it being waterproof by any means. After about two years, the hinge part broke, causing the unit to flop around and not hold to any angle settings. As a result, I use this headlamp in bed while reading and have replaced it with others for outside use.
"Fantastic Headlamp, not the ingest battery life though" 11/17/10
I've had this headlight long enough to wear it for 200-300 hours worth. It's 3-LED light variations are pretty good, one being a direct beam, one being a more general light provision, and lastly an emergency strobe. The main issues I have with it are that the light quality begins to dim after less time then you would think. Also, I would like it if BD would add a red light variation for reading/writing at night so the bright LED lights don't bother myself or others in the tent. Overall for the money, this headlight is top notch! I would just like a few more options and better battery life.
"Great headlamp, awesome output." 10/27/10
This isn't the brightest headlamp out there, but it's one of the best. Look around! There is a reason this headlamp is so favored - it's AWESOME! The SPOT flood lamp is super bright and really concentrated, but not overly so. It'll light up anything in front of you and around you. When you switch to LED mode, it's the perfect amount of light for setting up camp, doing a night hike when you don't need so much throw as the SPOT setting provides, or if you're messin' around in the tent. It's a little bright for reading, though - but a single LED light/keychain weighs and costs nothing. This is a quality headlamp, and has never been a bad choice. I bought 2 to use as backups!
"Good headlamp and great spotlight" 07/20/10
You ever have that one thing far away at night where you just can't get your headlamp to see? Not if you have this thing. The spotlight is also great for bouldering at night since it lights up exactly what you are looking at. The button system is a little bit of a pain, going through the half clicks. Also, every time you turn it on it seems to be in the opposite mode you want it to be in (spotlight vs smaller LEDs). I did not see it as that big a deal it did not have a redlight option. Seen the redlight used and you might as well go by moonlight. All in all, it is a good headlamp that gives you your money's worth
"This light rocks wish we would have had it.." 05/16/10
This light is amazing. We were doing the keyhole trail last summer and I so wished that we would have had it when we were out there. It is so bright and they were not kidding about the range on this light. It's sturdy and easy to use compared to other products that we have had. If you want a great light, go with the Black Diamond.
