It took me a few minutes to figure out how to use all of the features of this thing but once I did, i fell in love. It is very bright and I like the fact that it is rechargeable. The dimming function and the red for retaining night vision are cool too. I like this much more than my last petzl lamp. Same price but this one is brighter and does more.
The BD ReVolt is great. I love the USB charging option, if I run out of juice while out, I can hook up a solar panel and top off. The batteries seem solid, though I had some issues initially with getting them to hold a charge. The metal tabs weren't sufficiently connecting to the battery terminals, but after a small adjustment all seems right. One thing I have noticed is the headband as started stretching out unevenly along the edges. However, one email to BD and a replacement is on the way. Great product from a great company!
YES you can use batteries other than Black Diamonds rechargeable in this head lamp. The BD batteries just have about 1/4" of their shrink-wrap removed to provide a spot for a safety mechanism (little metal bump in the battery tray) so you can't inadvertently try to charge a non rechargeable battery. All you have to do is trim the same amount of of the label off your existing battery so the metal of the battery is exposed allowing the charging circuit safety to see that you indeed have a rechargeable battery installed. There is nothing unique or different from the BD batteries or any other brand. The only thing note worthy is that they are 1,000mah cells compared to 750mah for most other rechargeable. So you will get a bit more run-time out of them if yours are not also 1,000mah. Other than that your existing rechargeable s will definitely work if they are still in good shape. IE not dead for over a year.
Black Diamond is quality. I've had three of their headlamps now and loved them all. This was is awesome too! Super bright, great features, finally a red light and great battery life. The red light could be a bit brighter. Overall great product that is 1.5 oz. lighter than my other headlamp from BD. The wife really likes her new light.
"Excellent white light, limited red light"
Does everything promised - worked flawlessly for 9 days on the overland track in Tasmania in winter with some pretty heavy usage without needing a recharge or batteries changed. Interface is simple enough to learn on the single button. Short press cycles between wide white and spot white lights. Hold down with either white light mode to dim - light pulses when you reach minimum or maximum brightness. From off, hold down button for 3 seconds for red light (not dim-able). The red light is fairly weak - only really good for map reading or up close chores like cooking or sticking your head in your pack. It won't annoy anyone around you but is too dim for long walks to the dunny or anything past arms reach. Had hoped to use this for the glow worm tunnels but is too dim to walk with. No complaints about the white light modes though - very flexible and good performance. Hold down button for 6 seconds to lockout to avoid inadvertent switching in pack - a bit finicky to operate but works well.
