The Black Diamond Dawn Patrol Hybrid Shell is named after "early-morning missions to score fresh tracks on local peaks before the workday begins". I had to use Black Diamond's quote because of how cool they make it sound. The idea is that they go out every morning and test gear to see what works and what doesn't. This empirical research means that only the highest quality product reaches the market. The Dawn Patrol Hybrid boasts a Schoeller StretchWoven nylon shell with a body-mapped, 3-layer waterproof laminate with NanoSphere to shed water. That's technical jargon for "highly mobile and water-repellent" So let those BD employees figure out what you need while you sleep in, then simply take advantage of the results.

Good Not Great !It's more like a late autumn or winter jacket but it has a slim fit which will be difficult to having a cozy midlayer inside. Schoeller softshell fabric is great on breathability but sadly it's not very good at blocking wind. So you can still feel the wind and have wind chill. hood is the largest I ever tried, it's easy to wear with a insulated skiing helmet, but also looks awkward if you are using it just for hiking. Even it's hybrid design with waterproof hardshell on shoulder and top front, but the chest pockets are covered by softshell, so stuff will be wet when in rain day!

Excellent Waterproof ShellFirst and foremost: This garment is a shell. It has no lining or inner fabric. It is a waterproof (OK, water-resistant) windbreaker, not a coat. That said, if features ring your chimes, this shell will delight. Outside, it has two zippered hand pockets and two zippered chest pockets. Inside, it has two open top pockets (no zipper or closure). Zippers are top notch, smooth operators. There are few things more annoying than paying $300 for a garment and then having to fight with cheap zippers. The grown-on hood is adjustable and expands to accommodate most helmets. Sewn-in elastic cords provide control to cinch the garment around your face (when using the hood) and around your waist (around the bottom edge of the garment). The stretch fabric, a product of Switzerland, claims to be "naturally self-cleaning" and abrasion resistant. Dawn Patrol Hybrid Shell is made in Bangladesh and imported by Black Diamond.

Best Value Storm JacketI've thoroughly tested this jacket in some harsh environments while riding an ATV all day in the rain, sleet, and snow. It has yet to leak water into the body and kept me dry time and time again. The fit of it is also great for mobility and minimizing bulk, making it an ideal rain coat for all four seasons. The only caveat that I have of the jacket is the zippers which are not waterproof. If they would spend a bit more money on zippers I would give this a 5/5! But since they aren't 4.5/5

Great lightweight coat..It's a great lightweight shell. It's a little snug in the shoulders though. I'm keeping though.

How would this Dawn Patrol Hybrid jacket compare to the Black Diamond Convergent Shell? Reviewers have commented this is water resistant and breathable, but because of that, supposedly doesn't block wind very well. So what is the intended use for it?

Thanks for reaching Moosejaw! The Black Diamond Convergent shell is made of Gortex and WindStopper, making it water- and wind- proof. Their Dawn Patrol Hybrid shell is treated with DWR (durable water repellent finish), making it water resistant, but not water- or wind- proof and is considered an active-use jacket because of its breathability.
