"This biner is awesome, user friendly and reiable."
Have used this biner for some time now and absolutely love it. It's super easy to use and even with my small cabbage like hands, I can easily manipulate it. I personally like it when I'm topped out and setting an anchor and need to use it with one hand. At first, I watched the gate pretty closely to ensure it snapped closed all the way and tested it all the time, however it performed like a pro and I no longer take the extra time to triple check like I used to. The only downfall to this biner is during the winter. If you're doing any ice climbing/mountaineering where you're sporting big dirty mitts, leave this puppy at home. Just a personal preference. It still worked in the winter, but I had to fondle it a bit more than I like to when time is of the essence and it's cold out!
"Better than automatic locks on your car"
Who hasn't had an 'oh crap' moment when they look down and realize they didn't lock a biner. This takes all the guess work out of making sure you are nice and secure. A marriage of the best part of your fridge (the magnets) and a rock solid biner. Buy it!
Amazing product, works wonderfully, it is a little bit more expensive than I would like, but the twist locks are not that much different anyway. Haven't heard of anyone that tried them and did not like it!!!
I am typically one inclined to embrace minimalist/simplistic design in climbing gear, and was thus sceptical of this concept when I first learned of it. However, after I wore through my old belay biner, and after having my (screwgate) belay biner completely unscrewed by a redirected rope whilst running a top belay, I decided to splurge and give the technology a try, being a fan of Black Diamond's gear otherwise. I was pleased with what I found. The mechanism is much easier and much more intuitive than other over-engineered bi- or tri-action auto-lockers, and the fact that magnetic clips are independent of one another increases the resilience of the system. Dust and dirt have not affected the action noticeably, and it functions just as well after thorough use. I am impressed, and would probably buy another of the same type when the time comes.
Auto-lockers can be a bit "fiddly". Squeeze, twist, pull down, etc. etc. The Magnetron decidedly is not fiddly-squeeze it-it opens. Let go, it closes. If you are concerned about positive action - don't be. Go to your gear store (perhaps Mossejaw...) and feel for yourself. It really is a nice piece of gear.
I would have usually thought twice about paying a premium for gimmicky features. However, I find the opposed magnets to be easier to unlock than a twist-lock or rotating sleeve locking carabiner. The loud double 'click' as the magnets make contact is also reassuring that the carabiner is indeed locked. If you're going for an autolocking carabiner, go for this one.
I really like the magnetron line since they are the easiest to operate of all the autolockers I have ever used. Specifically I use these to clip into the anchors on sport routes. They can be easily be opened in a second with one hand and I enjoy the peace of mind that my carabiners are locked when I take my hand off them. Overall this is a bit pricey but totally worth it.
The magnetrons are really helpful when you need to operate a biner quickly with one hand. I like using them for clipping into anchors when I'm pumped out and struggling to make that last clip. It's also really nice having the peace of mind that my biners are always locked when I take my hand off them.
