Equipped with a bright 80-meter beam for spotting anything nocturnal, fabulous or elusive, and there’s also some battery-saving ambient lighting for frenching Hottie McCutes in the dark. Or maybe not some of that.
The Icon Headlamp by Black Diamond is for serious night owls. Its compact front housing holds the three-watt LED flanked by four SuperBright LEDs to produce either a night-piercing searchlight-up to 80 meters-or bright ambient lighting. The Icon's battery-power meter uses three colored indicator lights to intuitively display remaining battery power-green (50% or more), yellow (20% or more) and red (less than 20%). Battery-saving circuitry and a glove-friendly Positron switch enable you to access multiple brightness settings and strobe mode for both the three watt and the Superbright LEDs.

"Light it up!" 01/12/12
I love this headlamp. It's very bright for the price and comfortable to wear. It's pretty lightweight for having three AA batteries but if I'm climbing with a headlamp I generally use a AAA lamp instead. The spotlight is almost as bright as a car's headlight and the floodlight setting has a good range of adjustments. Battery life is good. I have no complaints.
"Good enough and rather cheap" 11/09/11
This is a good enough headlight I would say. It produces a decent amount of light and beacuse of the extra batteries, it lasts quite long. Of course you will not get the same beam as from the petzl lights but they are much more expensive too. Unless you are hiking at night or doing very advanced activities also at night, I think this light is perfectly fine. I have had it when jogging at night on trails but would probably prefer something stronger if I went off the trail. For the price you pay it is very good though, feels professional.
"Best head lamp I've found" 06/22/11
My husband bought me this last year and I love it. It's bright, has many settings and the batteries last a long time (I have the rechargeable battery). I have used it on up to 10 day backpacking trips without having to use my backup batteries. Much better than my old one!
"Don't hit the trail without it" 05/05/11
I've found this headlamp easy to operate and have put it to use on more than just backpacking. I've also used it when I work on computer hardware and working on my vehicle.Speaking for headlamps in general, you can't beat the hands free lighting this provides when you are trying to set up your tent after the sun has gone down. I little bulkier and heavier than other headlamps.. but it fits my needs perfectly.
"BRIGHT!" 02/20/11
First off this thing is awesome and stupid bright! the spot beam has amazing distance and the flood light lights up the immediate area very well. Only complaint is that its really heavy with the battery pack in the back... You can tough thru it but its really noticeable. worked great for some night climbs and all around hiking and backpacking.
"Amazing range" 09/26/10
This has a beam that could light up the moon. I really love how I'm never in the dark with it. The plastic does leave a little to be desired, it feels like if I dropped it would break. But the beam is great and it is balanced on my head well.
"I Like It" 08/13/10
Super bright. It took me a minute to figure out the handy brightness setting but the directions helped. Its bight enough for mr to find th horses in a 35 acre field. so im happy with it. i cant wait to hit the caves, that is, when they reopen. cursed white nose syndrome.
"One Bright Light!" 08/10/10
I love this headlamp. I've had an older Princeton Tec headlamp for some time now and decided to updgrade. This lamp is so much brighter and the batteries last a lot longer. It is highly capable of lighting up the night or staying dim enough not to disturb anyone else in the tent.
"Every so often you get a dud." 07/14/10
I read tons of good reviews about the icon, so I got one (as I'm a BD fan). Maybe I just had high expectations, or maybe I have high standards, but my icon is awful. Battery life is much less than advertised (yes, even at the dim settings of both light options), and it just doesn't throw any light. My friends' Energizer headlamps from the local grocery store consistently outdo my BD. I expect I just got a dud, but I hate my icon.
"might rather have this than sunlight" 05/19/10
No sunburns, clearly illuminated routes, and no need to see the exposure? sounds awesome. But really, this light is all that you will ever need unless you're on a faster mode of transport (bike/ski) but otherwise it functions awesome. Also very useful in photographing highlight of features as an alternative to bouncing strobes and such
