"Great manual belay device, like it more than the standard ATC"
04/14/13
Got this on sale at Moosejaw and it's ballin'. Used the standard ATC in the past, but I dig the high friction mode on the XP (I can belay my bud who ways 230 lbs with no problem). The biner is real light and super smooth as well. I would recommend this for anyone not wanting a solid manual belay device.
I can't stand belaying without the teeth anymore. I don't think i'll ever get a device that doesn't have teeth unless its an auto lock. This is also a very useful biner. I don't use much on for belaying any more because I have a grid lock but it still gets used a lot for other purposes.
Been using this systems for a while now (5 years) and they are very easy to use not to mention very affordable. 3rd kit I have bought till now (1 of them whore it down after 3 years and decided to replace, the 2nd one was stolen, now on my 3rd)
This package is really simple but reliable. the new atc belay is lighter and still can take a beating. I most use mine in the gym for sport climbing but works just as well out in the backcountry on long days. carabiner is nothing special but works just fine! Great for the price!
I already have one of these ATC's, however I bought a second one for my wife. Its a great belay device for the price it is offered at! great for beginners or experienced climbers!

I really like this ATC and it's really handy if you belay larger folks (mind you I'm all of 5'3" on a good day, so pretty much everyone is a larger folk to me). Just watch when you run the rope through it that it doesn't lock/catch itself...makes the ride down a little jolty for your buddy. Moosejaw gave me the heads up on this one - thanks!
