An ultralight version of the Betamid, the two-person Beta Light by Black Diamond is built from 30d SilNylon to provide the same coverage of 3.2 square meters (34.7 square feet) at half the weight and space in your pack. It pitches taut and is fast and easy to set up and break down with seven stake outs and two adjustable length trekking poles or ski poles (not inlcuded). The floorless design lets you set up your stove inside and have dinner without worrying about spilling on the floor. For a three-season shelter, the Beta Light can be used with the Beta Bug.

lightweight shelterThis is an excellent lightweight shelter for spring ski tours, since you have ski poles with you anyway. If it's windy you can seal the edges with snow, though the front door will still flap. In a bad storm I'd prefer a real tent. Being sil-nylon it doesn't breathe, so expect condensation - if it's bad, use a wash cloth or rag to wipe the sides down where you might brush against getting in & out. Not recommended for buggy conditions.
