"Great for its intended use" 01/28/12
There are always a plethora of complaints about how uncomfortable this harness is. It was never designed for comfort. It is a light weight, packable, bomb proof harness for the alpine back-country. This is no sport climbing harness and if adjusted wrong will probably chop your balls off in a big lead fall. I love using it on long alpine traverses, glacier climbs, and any trip when I am not sure if I will need a harness.
"Not bad if you wear a cup..." 12/07/11
I'm so cheap, I've been sport climbing in this for 2 years. Only if you prefer the classy appearance of the traditional double-back-through buckle over features such as a belay loop and your genitalia, might this be the right harness for you (or if you're buying it for it's intended alpine/mountaineering purposes). Hurts around the back and inner thighs to lower, hang-dog, or fall. On the plus side, it has kept me alive, has a haul loop, and the gear loops have held up fine.
"Pretty good harness" 09/05/11
I think this is a good beginners harness. The material is very durable, it fits great, I love the four gear loops. The only draw back is it's not very comfortable when hang-dogging or rappeling. It's actually bruised my hips a bit. But if you want a simple beginners harness that gives you added motivation to send and not hangdog, this is the one.
"Easy on the Wallet and the Back, hard on the Crotchal Region." 04/30/11
Bought this to get into rock climbing, with mountaineering in the back of my head. I've taken in climbing 5 or 6 times, and it has kept me safe and sound. Not too fun to fall on because of the low padding. But it is easy to get in and out of and very light (easy on the back if you're packing it in). If you are into the minimalist ethic, this is the way to go.
"good but not versatile" 04/17/11
if you are concerned about weight and ease -to-use, this is it. Not good if you need to hang on it for a long time, it's not that well-padded at the hips (and no pad at all at the legs)
"Excellent for what it is" 02/16/11
I feel a bit redundant reviewing this harness again, but whatever. I love it. Great lightweight harness for alpine mountaineering, or even ice climbing. There is no padding, but when outfitted for cold-weather pursuits you have enough padding from your clothes. Sure there is no belay loop, but you can make do if you are careful. My climbing gym wouldn't let me use it for that reason, but I wouldn't want to. i have another harness that is more comfortable for the gym environment. The harness is also super easy to put on and remove, and toilet breaks are aided by the clip-up leg loops.
"Perfect for alpine climbing" 01/08/11
I love how light and easy this harness is. The price tag is nice too! It's a great harness for alpine climbing. You might get laughed at if you take it to the climbing gym though. The only issue is that there is no belay loop but that inconvienience is outweighed by how easy it is to take on and off.
"It's the standard issue alpine harness for a reason- fast, light, simple, easy to use." 11/15/10
I purchased this harness for general mountaineering use in alpine environments, and it serves that function perfectly. light weight, leg clips allow easy on/off over thick layers or crampons and in less than perfect conditions. Leg loops are made of thick enough webbing that the lack of padding won't be too problematic if you aren't hanging for extended periods of time. Waist belt could be more comfortable for long term wear, especially when hiking uphill, but this is a minor inconvenience and far from a deal-breaker. Overall, an excellent (if not ideal) harness for mountain use.
"great for mountaineering" 11/07/10
great mountaineering harness on course I attended last summer everyone on course was using. When hanging in it for a while though it was probably not the best choice for that type of activity (ie rock climbing ect.).
"Nice and light" 10/29/10
I used my reward points to buy this new alpine climbing harness and just got it in the mail today and am very satisfied with it. it is fairly light weight and very compact. solid thick nylon all around and is certainly not built for comfort witch is not a problem for most alpine climbing where not a whole lot of time is spent dangling from a rope. The thigh buckles seem to be durable and strong enough for mid weight climbers. This harness is nothing fancy but will certainly satisfy most climbers. it did for me and to this day i have never been disappointed with any black diamond equipment.
